The Master of Arts program in Historical Studies is designed to accommodate a variety of interests and career paths that connect individuals to a deeper knowledge of history. The diverse curriculum meets the needs of students wanting to enter the growing field of Public History, teach at the K-12 level, and those seeking to go on for a doctorate in history and an academic career. The program emphasizes academic and professional training in historiography, historical methods and theory, and current conceptual tools and techniques for organizing and presenting historical evidence.

The goal of the MEES program is to train students with career interests in some aspect of environmental science involving geosciences, ecosciences and cellular/molecular sciences. The program is university system-wide and interdisciplinary, allowing students to use facilities and interact with faculty of the entire university system to plan a program best suited to their particular interests. Students may take courses anywhere in the University System of Maryland and may organize advisory and examining committees with faculty from one or more institutions, including the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES). Although the program is system-wide, students enroll at one of the degree-granting campuses most appropriate to their research interests and professional goals. The MEES program leads to both the master’s and the doctoral degrees. The primary focus of both degrees is original research directed by a research advisor and overseen by a committee knowledgeable in the student’s area of specialization.

The Master of Science in Engineering Management focuses on advanced engineering developments and the management of enterprises and government programs specializing in engineering activities. The aim of the M.S. in Engineering Management is to provide students with a basic and focused set of advanced business/management skills coupled with advanced skills in a specific technical area commensurate with students’ interests and likely technical employment.

The M.A. in Economic Policy Analysis is a joint program offered by the departments of economics and public policy. The course of study combines a multi-disciplinary approach to policy analysis, with focused study on the use of economic tools to analyze policy issues. The core economics courses present the tools of analysis commonly used by economists, such as economic modeling and econometrics.

Human-Centered Computing is the discipline that explores human interaction with information technologies and the use of these technologies to improve lives. The program focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive information technology systems that are both usable and accessible.

The MPS is designed to prepare computer science, information systems, and other technical professionals to fill management and leadership roles in cybersecurity. This interdisciplinary degree program gives security professionals the range of knowledge and skills needed to be successful as managers in the emerging field of cybersecurity. Coursework includes a blend of management/legal/business courses with more technically focused courses.

The Human Services Psychology graduate program’s primary commitment is to train psychologists for research and service in the public sector, placing special emphasis on the problems of inner-city, minority and poor populations, children, youth and the aged.

The graduate programs in biological sciences are designed to offer a broad, multi-disciplinary, modern education in the life sciences coupled with the development of in-depth expertise and research training within a specialized area.

The Atmospheric Physics (ATPH) graduate program aims to educate future leaders in the physical and Earth sciences. The curriculum is designed to train students with both deep understanding of the fundamental laws of physics that govern weather and climate as well as practical tools and skills in a broad range of applications. The ATPH faculty members involve graduate students in wide-ranging research areas, including the design and fabrication of airborne and satellite borne sensors, active and passive remote sensing techniques, ultraviolet to thermal infrared spectroscopy, light scattering and radiative transfer, atmospheric dynamics, and many others.

The graduate program in Applied Sociology prepares students for careers in program development and evaluation, policy analysis, and research in the fields of health, aging, and diversity and gender.
