The Master of Arts program in Historical Studies is designed to accommodate a variety of interests and career paths that connect individuals to a deeper knowledge of history. The diverse curriculum meets the needs of students wanting to enter the growing field of Public History, teach at the K-12 level, and those seeking to go on for a doctorate in history and an academic career. The program emphasizes academic and professional training in historiography, historical methods and theory, and current conceptual tools and techniques for organizing and presenting historical evidence.

The Department of Emergency Health Services at UMBC offers a graduate program leading to a Master of Science degree. This degree is also a core component of the UMB-UMBC post-residency fellowship in emergency medical services and incorporates offerings from several university departments at both UMBC and UMB.

The Environmental Engineering (ENEN) Program emphasizes research in environmental engineering and water resources. Environmental engineers identify and design solutions for environmental problems, such as providing safe drinking water, treating and safely disposing of wastes, controlling water pollution, maintaining air quality and remediating contaminated sites. Water resources engineering is a profession that deals with the use, management and conservation of natural water resources above and below ground surface to assure availability and affordability of safe and clean sources of water for society.

The statistics program is designed for students interested in pursuing an advanced degree and who have earned the equivalent of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mathematics, statistics or in other mathematically oriented disciplines. The doctoral programs provide training suitable for employment in academia, industrial research and development organizations, as well as research-oriented government agencies. The master’s degree programs provide training in applications of mathematics in areas suitable for employment in industry or government agencies and can serve as preparatory steps toward advancing to a Ph.D. program.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers courses of study leading to M.S. The department offers an Accelerated Program for students who wish to combine their undergraduate studies with a master’s degree and thesis. Graduate certificates in Mechatronics and in Computational Thermal/Fluid Dynamics consist of a sequence of four graduate courses in a specific technical area. Credits from a graduate certificate apply to the M.S. degree program.

The graduate program in Applied Sociology prepares students for careers in program development and evaluation, policy analysis, and research in the fields of health, aging, and diversity and gender.

The interdisciplinary Public Policy program, which offers both a master’s and doctoral degree, is designed for highly motivated individuals who wish to pursue advanced graduate studies in public policy and public policy analysis. The student body includes both full-time and part-time students. Most of the courses are offered in the evening to permit students who work to pursue their degrees.

The graduate program in Intercultural Communication allows students to develop advanced foreign language proficiency, to train them to function comfortably and effectively in intercultural situations, and to prepare them for specific career goals through individual courses of study and internships.
