An individual plan of graduate study in chemical engineering compatible with the student’s interest and background is offered. UMBC’s Master’s in Professional Studies (M.P.S.): Industrial /Organizational Psychology explores and integrates important topics such as human resource practice, organizational behavioral management, human factors and culminates with a professional capstone experience. Understanding the importance of communication, presentation and critical thinking skills, UMBC’s M.P.S.: Industrial/Organizational Psychology covers the essential techniques and skills necessary for success in this field. Our program enables students to develop a professional portfolio while building strong relationships with faculty practitioners and industry professionals. Based in Rockville, Maryland, at the Universities at Shady Grove, the program offers evening, weekend, and select online courses for busy professionals.

The Master of Science in Engineering Management focuses on advanced engineering developments and the management of enterprises and government programs specializing in engineering activities. The aim of the M.S. in Engineering Management is to provide students with a basic and focused set of advanced business/management skills coupled with advanced skills in a specific technical area commensurate with students’ interests and likely technical employment.

The Health Information Technology M.P.S. degree combines courses in Health Information Technology strategy, policy, and management with more technical, hands-on Health Information Technology courses that allow students to develop a formal educational program that best meets their individual career development needs.

UMBC’s Intermedia and Digital Arts M.F.A. Program is where interdisciplinary artists seek to expand or reinvent their professional practice. The IMDA program is committed to art that poses unique conceptual and social challenges while offering an environment that provides artists a studio, teaching opportunities, courses in emerging methods, contemporary art and theory, engaged faculty, premier visiting artists and high-end research centers that are typical of a research university.

The graduate program in Computer Science provides advanced instruction and training and research opportunities to prepare students for careers in business, industry, academia and government agencies. The program reflects state-of-the-art knowledge in major theoretical and applied aspects of computation.

UMBC offers an MA in TESOL and a graduate ESOL Certificate.  Established in 1979, our TESOL program is designed to train both prospective and experienced teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). It provides students with a strong theoretical and practical foundation in applied linguistics, language acquisition, ESL/EFL methodology, testing, cross-cultural studies and curriculum development.  Both programs can be taken completely in face-to-face classes on campus, completely online, or with a combination of face-to-face and online classes.

The Master of Professional Studies in Software Engineering is a ten-course program designed for professionals interested in developing software at all levels. 

In this interdisciplinary graduate program, students will gain both comprehensive software engineering knowledge and skills, in addition to increased exposure to coursework in leadership, communications, management, and ethics.  The MPS degree provides hands-on applied experience, real-world application of relevant concepts, mentorship, and industry connections.

• Students will learn modern approaches to software development: requirements analysis, system design techniques, formal specification techniques, implementation, testing, debugging, metrics, human factors, quality assurance, cost estimation, maintenance, and tools.
• Students will be introduced to, and gain firsthand experience on, the fundamentals of software testing and the main phases in the software development process.
• Students will gain experience working on hands-on programming projects that prepare students to work in co-located or geographically distributed software development team environments

The graduate programs in biological sciences are designed to offer a broad, multi-disciplinary, modern education in the life sciences coupled with the development of in-depth expertise and research training within a specialized area.
