An actuary is a mathematically-oriented business person who will most likely be a manager or supervisor at some point in their career. A major in actuarial science is an excellent educational background for prospective actuaries.

The actuarial science program is designed to prepare students for the current industry demands. Because the demands change on a regular basis, oftentimes the number of hours, the sequencing of courses, and the specific requirements change for this major. Students should continue to consult with the department for the appropriate selection and listing of course requirements.

The film studies program is housed in the Department of English. The program is centered on a core curriculum of four courses in the history of film, film genre, and film directors, as well as film theory and criticism. To these core courses are added related courses, particularly those that integrate the study of moving image culture with rhetoric, philosophy, literary criticism, ethnic literature, and visual cultures of all types. The program is designed for students who wish to ultimately work in academic film studies and also for students who wish to understand film better as an art form, as popular culture, and as a major medium of communication.

The Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality, Restaurant & Tourism Management is jointly offered by the College of Education & Human Sciences and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The degree prepares individuals to serve as general managers and directors of hospitality operations by providing an excellent foundation in hospitality, leadership, and business. The program integrates hospitality marketing strategies, communications, and financial management into a curriculum focused on managing facilities and operations that provide hospitality services to the public. Students take HRTM core required courses then select professional courses which include advanced courses in Food & Beverage; Lodging; Event Planning; Tourism/Public Relations; and Human Resources. All students will receive a minor in Leadership & Communication offered by the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication. Students may also complete a minor in business with a few additional classes.

The goal of any financial system is to allocate monetary resources to those individuals, companies, and governmental units that have the best ideas for usage. The study of finance focuses on the organization and development of capital markets and financial institutions in achieving the optimal usage of funds. As a finance student, you might want to examine how conflict of interest affects managerial performance, how risk influences investment decisions, or how investor psychology can impact the price of stocks and bonds. The finance faculty offer strong support for the exploration of such topics and the curriculum is designed to prepare students in areas of high employment demand.

The finance major offers coursework in the following areas of specialization:

• Banking and Risk Management
• Investments
• General Finance

Finance students must declare one of these specializations as a formal option within their major. Multiple options cannot be chosen. Students are encouraged to meet with their Business Advising and Student Engagement (BASE) advisors on a regular basis. The department chair is also available to answer questions regarding the selection of courses or other questions related to the finance curriculum.

What you will learn
Students will learn to apply the principles and techniques of time value of money, quantify and interpret risk/reward relationships using a variety of metrics, estimate the fundamental value of traded and non-traded assets, identify resources of risk and implement appropriate risk management techniques and analyze market conditions for strategic planning.

Economic analysis is useful in many decisions made by individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and governments. In addition to opportunities in teaching, economists are employed in many branches of government and on the staffs of corporations in manufacturing, insurance, banking, brokerage, and financial services. Economists often serve as consultants, either individually or in consulting firms. Today's economists deal with problems ranging from monetary and fiscal policy, monopoly and competition, environmental improvement, labor relations, regional development, urban reconstruction, economic development, and international business and finance. Economics is also a popular major for students planning to enter professional and graduate programs, particularly in law, foreign service, labor relations, business administration, or policy analysis.

A political science major combines the analytical and communication skills of a liberal arts degree with an in-depth understanding of governments and political processes. Your political science major prepares you for virtually any career path—from government to law, journalism to business. Courses in political science examine government and politics in the United States and around the world.

This program of study emphasizes the application of both business and economic principles to the problems/issues confronting agribusiness firms. Students will have an opportunity to pursue a rigorous program of study in both agricultural sciences and business courses leading to a career in a wide range of employment opportunities within the agribusiness field. With assistance from academic advisors, students can acquire depth and/or breadth in their program of study by selecting elective courses that meet their own individual interests.

Textile and Apparel Design, commonly referred to as Fashion Design, relates the physical properties of textiles to our human need for functional and fashionable clothing and home accessories. This option combines the art of design, the science of chemistry and the perspective of history in a rich, challenging learning environment that prepares you for dynamic careers at the creative forefront of the textile industry.

The applied science degree program will prepare students for professions that involve the application of science in society, rather than the practice of science and scientific research.  The goal is to provide an integrated understanding of how basic and applied science benefit and impact us, from the individual to the biosphere.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln students pursuing the bachelor of science degree in Grassland Systems will benefit from an interdisciplinary, holistic approach to the study of grasslands, rangelands, and prairies.  Approximately 60% of Nebraska’s landmass is grassland which offers exceptional experiential learning opportunities.  Students first develop a strong base with core courses in grassland systems, mathematics and statistics, communications, and natural sciences before advanced study in one of two options: grassland ecology and management (GECM) or grazing livestock systems (GLS).
