The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music allows students to study music within a larger context of a liberal arts education. In comparison to the curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Music (B.M.), less emphasis is placed on studies specifically in music, with greater flexibility for studies in a field outside of music. In lieu of a larger number of credits in music as required for the B.M, the B.A. student completes a 21-credit option in an area outside of music. In addition, completion of a major paper or capstone recital (half recital) is required during the senior year.

Composition - Concentration
The Composition concentration is a professional undergraduate degree program designed to prepare the student to compose original music for a wide variety of genres, including symphonic works, chamber music, electronic music, and music for media. Course work emphasizes comprehensive musicianship, with particular emphasis on individualized study in music composition.

The International Studies major is an interdisciplinary program designed to help you explore and understand the nature of diverse cultures and peoples. You’ll learn a broad range of subjects, all of which contribute to a wide range of job prospects from government, academics, law and foreign service to communications, media, journalism, and beyond. Within the major, you’ll have multiple opportunities to travel, learn languages, and explore cultures around the world.

The International Studies major is an interdisciplinary program designed to help students understand the nature of diverse cultures and peoples. There are five concentrations: Asian Studies, European Studies, Global Studies, Latin American Studies, and Middle East and North African Studies. Courses are required in anthropology & geography, political science, economics, history, foreign language,and international studies, with other elective courses chosen from these and many more disciplines across the college and university.

European Studies - Concentration
This interdisciplinary concentration combines European history, religion, philosophy, literature, art, and political science, along with three years of language (French, German, Russian, Spanish, or substitution with advisor approval) to give you the tools to understand and interpret the continent’s rich-and-intriguing past and present.

The B.F.A. in Art is considered the professional degree for studio art and art education majors, allowing you to explore various mediums and gain a foundational knowledge base in art history. You’ll get opportunities to learn from masters of their crafts as well as look back upon art throughout the ages, different forms of expression, and their impact on society.

Pottery - Concentration
The Pottery concentration is committed to providing a comprehensive curriculum in the range of processes and concepts present in contemporary ceramic art. The philosophy of the area encourages the concurrent development of critical, technical, and manual skills. Issues and debates in contemporary crafts, sculpture, architecture, design, and studio pottery are presented alongside a rigorous exploration of forming and decorating processes and technology. Faculty mentor students in refining their artistic voice through the medium of ceramics. Students' conceptual development and materials-based learning are encouraged through access to a well-equipped studio facility with materials and tools that support experimentation. Students' capstone experience results in a defined body of work that demonstrates conceptual rigor and depth of choices connecting the material and the visual.

The Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship consists of foresters, range scientists, hydrologists, and social scientists that study natural environmental processes and how they interact with human systems.

Forest landscapes are always changing, sometimes very slowly as a result of long-term processes, followed by rapid changes as a result of fires or harvesting. Sustaining forests in the modern world requires people who understand these changes and how forests connect to global, ecological, and social systems. Colorado’s high-elevation grasslands, forests, and riparian areas provide the perfect backdrop for this area of study, and you’ll get plenty of chances to learn outdoors as you become a steward of the lands.

The Geography major is housed in the Department of Anthropology and Geography. Through coursework and internship opportunities, majors are provided with a broad background in geographic thinking. The major emphasizes interactions between humans and the environment in an era of rapid global change. Critical study of diverse relationships between space, place, humans, built and natural environments allows students to interpret geographic features, patterns and processes.

The Geography curriculum also concentrates specifically on mountain ecosystems and human-environment interactions. Coursework takes advantage of faculty expertise in these areas of study, some of which are specific to the state of Colorado. Geography faculty use a wide range of research methods, including geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, spatial modeling, spatial statistics, participatory methods and ethnography to address applied research questions in Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, Patagonia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Melanesia, and Africa. It’s no secret that knowing other languages opens doors to a world of opportunities. This major offers undergraduate instruction in 10 languages, concentrations in French, German and Spanish, and opportunities for education abroad. You’ll gain the ability to communicate in another tongue, but also to analyze literary texts and films, to understand the workings of language, to appreciate diversity and to interact successfully across cultures.

Spanish - Concentration
Courses include language, linguistics, translation, Latin American literatures and cultures, Peninsular literatures and cultures and Transatlantic studies. Students join the Spanish Club, El Centro, and study abroad.
