Psychology
The Psychology Department’s mission is to teach psychology as a research science in the context of a liberal arts education through a comprehensive curriculum and innovative pedagogy. Our curriculum provides a grounding in all the main core areas of the discipline, but also allows opportunities for students to do independent research and to study specialized, interdisciplinary and applied topics.
Because the total number of credits required to complete the major is limited, students are also able to take advantage of the full range of liberal arts courses offered at Drew. Our pedagogy promotes a high quality education by emphasizing excellence in teaching, research methodology, experiential learning, mentoring, independent study and utilization of technology.

Pan-African Studies
Pan-African Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers extensive study of the history, cultures, politics and socioeconomic structures of Africa and the African Diaspora. Students develop a comparative perspective in order to understand the rich network of linkages, movements and exchanges among African peoples; the complex geographical and cultural landscapes that shape their lives, and the interactions among Europeans, Asians, Native Americans and peoples of African descent. The program teaches students to use diverse historical, political, ethnographic, artistic and literary forms of analysis from the humanities, social and behavioral sciences and fine arts.

The biology major offers students the opportunity to study the biological basis of life from a wide range of perspectives, from ecosystems to organisms to cells and molecules. A critical component of our curriculum is active, inquiry-based learning, including classroom and laboratory experiences that provide not only in-depth exposure to core concepts in biology but also development of skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis, and scientific writing.

We offer a rigorous scientific curriculum grounded in the liberal arts tradition of making connections with many areas both within and outside of the sciences, as students learn to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. Historically, the field of public health has focused on preventing the spread of contagious diseases among population groups through a variety of means including health education, medical intervention and water quality control. Today’s public health policy makers, researchers and practitioners confront a daunting array of challenges to the health of various population groups at home and abroad and their environments. Public health research is shaping policy debates over disease prevention, health care reform and climate change.

This multidisciplinary program encompasses the biomedical sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. Our curriculum enables majors to examine public health problems from a number of different disciplinary perspectives. The major offers a population-level approach to solving health problems with a strong focus on scientific, social and ethical principles. Public health majors through their research projects  and coursework acquire the methodological skills needed to assess the prevalence and incidence of illnesses, disorders and disabilities in specific population groups. Public Health majors develop a mastery of health care policy issues and an in-depth understanding of the many public health programs administered by federal, state and local  government and international agencies. Upon graduation, they are prepared to do epidemiological research or participate in health policy making and program implementation.

This transition from an INTO program to a university degree program is called progression. You must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA per semester to remain in good academic standing in the Pathway program at Drew.

Mathematics
Mathematics lies at the heart of the liberal arts. Based in abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics is both a body of knowledge and an elegant and useful way of perceiving our world. Through mathematics, we can distill and describe the otherwise hidden patterns and relations among things. Because of this, mathematics finds ubiquitous application, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the arts. Precise abstraction and quantification play an increasingly important role in these diverse areas, and the study of mathematics can provide a foundation for any of them.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Finance major is designed to appeal to students wanting to immerse themselves in financial markets and data analysis.  Our rigorous and exciting curriculum engages our students through real-world exposure to U.S. and global markets, and prepares our graduates for success in careers throughout the financial industry.

Physics provides much of the conceptual foundation and instrumentation fundamental to astronomy, engineering and other sciences. It has inspired the creative work of mathematicians, philosophers and social scientists. Drew’s program is designed to provide rigorous preparation for those planning careers in the field, while also serving the needs of liberal arts students interested in a variety of other careers.

CHINESE STUDIES explores one of the world’s most powerful shapers of the future. Majoring or double-majoring in Chinese Studies opens doors and makes graduates uniquely desirable to employers in any number of fields, from business to the sciences to humanities and fine arts. Available as a major or minor program of study.

Through its rigorous curriculum, the Chinese program prepares students linguistically and intellectually for interaction with China and the Chinese-speaking world. Speaking, reading and translating are stressed at all levels of language instruction. Extracurricular activities—study groups, field trips, films and more—help to integrate the study of the language and the culture.

Art History
Art History majors study the visual arts, past and present, as forms of communication that are shaped by physical, cultural, political, psychological and economic contexts. Our majors are guided through a curriculum that provides historical and geographic breadth in the history of art and an introduction to studio art practice. In small, discussion-based courses our majors master the critical reading, writing and speaking skills that will prepare them to successfully navigate our media-rich world.
The Art History curriculum enhances classroom learning with experiential opportunities. We take full advantage of our proximity to New York City, a global art capital. The New York Semester on Contemporary Art is often described by our majors as a formative experience. Museums and Society, a course conducted partially at regional museums, offers another opportunity for experiential learning. Majors are also encouraged to include credit-bearing arts-related internships as part of their curriculum.

These internships and experiential learning opportunities encourage students to begin thinking about their careers and help them develop valuable skills while at Drew.

A key feature of Drew’s program is an internship, which allows students to build experience and work with a talented group of industry mentors. Mentors work with students in diverse areas such as municipal bond research, derivatives trading, and private equity, and each student has the opportunity to expand their network with NYC-based financial institutions during their time at Drew. A team-based portfolio management assignment occurs during the capstone, which allows students to present asset allocation recommendations to a panel of industry practitioners and financial experts

Financial Engineering

Drew’s STEM-designated Master of Science in Finance program with a concentration in Financial Engineering is a rigorous, 30-credit immersion in advanced finance. Students will learn how to apply finance, mathematics, programming, and engineering methods to build models and solve complex financial problems. Across the financial markets, there is a growing need for financial engineering skills in algorithmic trading, risk management, securitization, and derivatives. Drew students will be leading that change forward.
