Economics
The Drew Economics Department has established three broad objectives for its economics curriculum. Biology
The biology major offers students the opportunity to study the biological basis of life from a wide range of perspectives, from ecosystems to organisms to cells and molecules. A critical component of our curriculum is active, inquiry-based learning, including classroom and laboratory experiences that provide not only in-depth exposure to core concepts in biology but also development of skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis, and scientific writing.

We offer a rigorous scientific curriculum grounded in the liberal arts tradition of making connections with many areas both within and outside of the sciences, as students learn to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. The Art Department offers a rigorous, supportive and personalized environment with a sound liberal arts foundation. We are committed to developing in each student the capacity for creative problem-solving in making art. The Dorothy Young Center for the Arts is home to the department’s offerings. An outstanding faculty of practicing artists, dedicated to both their art practice and teaching excellence is teamed with a rare depth of facility: amazing studios, brilliant light, safety, technology, and space.

The History Department at Drew is devoted to providing its students excellent instruction in the interpretation of human experience in the past. Drew offers a broad range of courses in American, European and global history. Together, we ask: were the main tensions, problems, movements, developments at any given point? Who were the primary actors or agents, whether individuals, institutions, social classes, or other groups? What were the prevailing relations of social, political, and economic power, and how and why might these have shifted over time? More broadly, how and why does historical change happen?

Our students learn to do history itself: to locate evidence; develop original arguments in response to the views of others; and use evidence to support one’s own interpretation of the past. It is our great hope that our students continue to draw on modes of historical reasoning and research whatever they may do in life after graduation.

French
The French program at Drew seeks to provide students with all levels of proficiency in the French language, and to offer them in-depth study of French and Francophone literature and culture.
We have a very diversified curriculum in French and Francophone studies that includes popular culture, cinema, business French and literature ranging from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Our instructors are either native speakers or have lived and studied in French-speaking countries for extended periods.
Conducted entirely in French, our language courses make extensive use of a vast array of multimedia tools that foster intensive student participation. Our culture and literature courses are interdisciplinary and focus both on the French and Francophone worlds. For non-French speakers interested in French studies, we also offer several courses in English (French and Francophone Women Writers and Francophone Literatures in Translation).

Chinese Studies
CHINESE STUDIES explores one of the world’s most powerful shapers of the future. Majoring or double-majoring in Chinese Studies opens doors and makes graduates uniquely desirable to employers in any number of fields, from business to the sciences to humanities and fine arts. Available as a major or minor program of study.

Through its rigorous curriculum, the Chinese program prepares students linguistically and intellectually for interaction with China and the Chinese-speaking world. Speaking, reading and translating are stressed at all levels of language instruction. Extracurricular activities—study groups, field trips, films and more—help to integrate the study of the language and the culture.

Mathematics
Mathematics lies at the heart of the liberal arts. Based in abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics is both a body of knowledge and an elegant and useful way of perceiving our world. Through mathematics, we can distill and describe the otherwise hidden patterns and relations among things. Because of this, mathematics finds ubiquitous application, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the arts. Precise abstraction and quantification play an increasingly important role in these diverse areas, and the study of mathematics can provide a foundation for any of them.

Media and Communications is designed to investigate how media and communication shapes identity, society and democratic processes. Available as a major or minor program of study.

Whether your interest is in media production, film, social media, journalism, advertising, or the impact media messages have on our lives, a degree in media and communications at Drew can help you meet your goals.
Our major prepares students for graduate work or further professional training, as well as for positions in media and communications industries. Courses developed by faculty in more than a dozen disciplines allow students to explore all aspects of media and communication from the theoretical to the practical, including media analysis and documentary production.

Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of humankind in cross-cultural and evolutionary perspectives. With one foot in the sciences (both social and biological) and the other in the humanities, anthropology takes a holistic approach and consists of four sub-disciplines: cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistics. Anthropologists emphasize fieldwork as a means to investigate cultural diversity and human biology in our species—past, present, and future.

Our major fulfills its mission by equipping the student with an integrated view of the discipline and providing biological, archaeological, linguistic, and cultural emphases with attention to laboratory and on-site field methods. The goal of the anthropology student is thus to construct a broader, more inclusive, and insightful view of humans/humanity in context.

The Department of Anthropology at Drew University emphasizes the importance of fieldwork and laboratory expertise. Through the major program in anthropology, biological anthropology and in the archaeology minor, students will be expected to develop first-hand experience with the specific research methodologies of the sub-discipline (ethnographic fieldwork, excavation  and laboratory research).  Further, Drew University offers a wide array of off-campus study opportunities—many of which contain ethnographic or social science research content—and it is very much recommended that students attempt to include one of these experiences in their programs.
