International Year One in Media and Communications will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at Drew University. Upon successful completion of International Year One and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your third year of undergraduate study at Drew University or at a number of well-known US universities. Writing and Communication Studies
You are intrigued by language and the power of writing. You want to use writing to make a difference. You know that writing matters: in how journalists make the news, in how people connect in communities, in how leaders lead. If that sounds like you, the Writing and Communication emphasis of the English major is for you! Writing Studies includes communication, rhetoric, social media studies, journalism, literacy and language, and community writing. It is a rapidly growing field and a vibrant part of the English Major at Drew, applying the close reading and critical thinking skills of the major to a broad array of public texts and contexts. You’ll learn how language shapes what we know, believe, and do. You’ll write to change the world.

Writing and Communication Studies is both a theoretical and a practical field, and this is reflected in course content but also in the internships and independent research open to you as a student in Drew’s English major. Our proximity to New York City and major media and publishing companies in New Jersey provides opportunities to intern pretty much anywhere, and our many alumni in the fields of writing and communication provide opportunities for mentorship during and beyond your years at Drew–both for those pursuing internships and for those considering graduate school. Drew’s Center for Internships and Career Development will also work with you to help you find an internship that draws on your interests and and extends your coursework.

The Department of Theatre and Dance trains you in the full range of theatrical disciplines, providing you with mentorship and support in creative expression, critical thinking and personal development. Our goal is to create total theatre artists.
The Theatre department at Drew is dedicated to a broad-based study of the history, literature, theory and practice of theatre and its various disciplines in the context of an overall liberal arts education. Students grow as artists through rigorous academic courses, internships, exciting opportunities for professional collaboration and an extensive co-curricular production program that centers on student initiative.

International Year One program in Pre-Engineering will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at Drew University. Upon successful completion of International Year one and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your third year of undergraduate study at a number of well-known US universities.
This transition from an INTO program to a university degree program is called progression. You must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA per semester to remain in good academic standing in the Pathway program at Drew.

Mathematics
Mathematics lies at the heart of the liberal arts. Based in abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics is both a body of knowledge and an elegant and useful way of perceiving our world. Through mathematics, we can distill and describe the otherwise hidden patterns and relations among things. Because of this, mathematics finds ubiquitous application, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the arts. Precise abstraction and quantification play an increasingly important role in these diverse areas, and the study of mathematics can provide a foundation for any of them.

English
As English majors, students read widely, engaging with many kinds of texts from multiple periods, geographical areas, genres, and literary traditions. Within the major, students choose a specific emphasis (Literature, Creative Writing, or Writing and Communication Studies) as their focus and develop their skills and knowledge through in-depth exploration within that emphasis.  Through the major, students develop flexibility of thought, attentiveness to language, an ability to engage with the world around them, and to understand difference (gender, race, class, ability, religion, nation), capacities which they may apply in almost any area of study or employment after college.  Upon completion of the major, students will particularly demonstrate the following:

Close Reading: In their reading of a text, students demonstrate attentiveness to language, technique, structure, cultural/historical reference, and forms and genres.

Range of Approaches: Students use critical frameworks to open texts in different ways.

Historicizing: Students analyze texts in relation to the historical period and culture in which they were produced.

Writing: Students write clearly and flexibly, using writing to develop and express ideas, to construct narratives, to connect with multiple audiences, and as a tool for thinking.

Information Literacy: Students can find, evaluate, and engage with sources using disciplinary research tools.

Synthesizing: In creating their own arguments, students draw on a variety of texts, scholars, and/or theories and place them into conversation with each other.

Finance
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Finance major is designed to appeal to students wanting to immerse themselves in financial markets and data analysis.  Our rigorous and exciting curriculum engages our students through real-world exposure to U.S. and global markets, and prepares our graduates for success in careers throughout the financial industry.

The Spanish Department strives to prepare students to participate actively in today’s global world, where Spanish is a major language spoken by over 500 million speakers worldwide. Our program is designed to dually meet the needs of students who are learning Spanish as a second language as well as those students who are bilingual heritage learners.

The language program fosters communicative, proficiency-oriented learning while also providing students with ample opportunities to better understand the diversity of cultures that make up the Spanish-speaking world. Our flexible curriculum for majors and minors draws on rich, interdisciplinary approaches that allow students to explore and engage in the study of literature, linguistics, film and cultural studies across historical periods and across areas of the Spanish-speaking world, including Spain, Latin America, the Caribbean and Latin communities in the U.S.

Students acquire the ability to analyze cultural productions within their specific sociopolitical and historical contexts while also employing critical perspectives that take into account broader frameworks, including class, race, gender, sexuality and power relations. Many of our students refine their linguistic proficiency and cultural awareness by engaging in a period of study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country. Upon graduation, students majoring in Spanish are able to apply their language skills and cultural knowledge across a range of professions in the U.S. and abroad where multilingual and transcultural competence are in high demand.

Drew’s engineering physics major is designed to provide an ideal pathway for students interested in a career in engineering. Engineering Physics
Drew’s engineering physics major is designed to provide an ideal pathway for students interested in a career in engineering. The core curriculum is built around the physics, mathematics, chemistry and computer science courses that form the foundational knowledge of engineering and introduce the engineering/design mindset required to solve today’s complex problems. Students pursuing engineering physics at Drew will be broadly trained with both strong technical skills and other critical transferable skills for effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. Some graduates continue their engineering studies through combined degree programs with Columbia and Washington University or through other graduate programs. Others pursue careers in fields ranging from acoustical engineering to computer aided design or solid state device fabrication.

The biology major offers students the opportunity to study the biological basis of life from a wide range of perspectives, from ecosystems to organisms to cells and molecules. A critical component of our curriculum is active, inquiry-based learning, including classroom and laboratory experiences that provide not only in-depth exposure to core concepts in biology but also development of skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis, and scientific writing.

We offer a rigorous scientific curriculum grounded in the liberal arts tradition of making connections with many areas both within and outside of the sciences, as students learn to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. Media and Communications is designed to investigate how media and communication shapes identity, society and democratic processes. Available as a major or minor program of study.

Our major prepares students for graduate work or further professional training, as well as for positions in media and communications industries.
