International Year One in Humanities and Social Sciences will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at George Mason University. Mason’s master of science in accounting program is designed to help you meet Virginia’s 150-credit CPA licensing requirement while developing advanced analytical, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills. Those who earn a master’s in accounting and pass the CPA exam have greater accounting career prospects and earning potential.  

Courses emphasize the latest trends and issues in accounting, business ethics, and corporate governance. You also can complete an internship for credit, which gives you meaningful work experience and can lead to a full-time employment offer. You’ll study financial, audit, and tax accounting, and you can also customize your degree by simultaneously earning a certificate in accounting for government contracts, government accounting, forensic accounting, or accounting analytics.

This bachelor's degree provides teacher candidates with the specialized knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to meet the educational needs of students in grades PreK-6. The robust, well-rounded program of study includes general and content-specific methods courses designed to prepare reflective teachers who are responsive to students’ diverse needs and ready to advance the 21st Century classroom. A strong partnership with local PK-6 schools ensures that teacher candidates are immersed in classroom settings with elementary students throughout their teacher preparation program. Art and Visual Technology majors learn design and production skills that will enable them to thrive in a competitive world.

Forward thinking and adaptive classes allow faculty to work with students as they develop aesthetic and analytical judgment, as well as the confidence to be self-reliant and collaborative. Faculty and students work together to challenge conventional thinking and blur the lines between traditional artistic disciplines. The School of Art facilitates access to the D.C. area's vibrant arts community; presenting opportunities to engage with museum curators, arts organizations and other professionals, creating a synthesis of educational and real-world experiences.

Sociology involves the systematic study of social structures, cultural patterns, and human relationships. It combines rigorous methods with theory and observation, yielding insights that challenge commonly held assumptions about the social world. Sociology also informs the practice of social and public service, aiding efforts to address important social problems. Sociology majors pursue a varied set of career paths, ranging from teaching, human service and human resource occupations, to positions in the criminal justice system, marketing, and social research. The major is excellent preparation for students considering law school or graduate training in the social and behavioral sciences.

The School of Business is ranked in the top 10 percent of the nation’s undergraduate business schools and offers a Bachelor of Science in Business with innovative concentrations. The School of Business also offers several options for a minor for business and non-business majors, as well as an undergraduate certificate program in accounting. The School of Business programs are designed to prepare graduates for work in a rapidly changing and competitive marketplace with local, regional, and global companies. With Mason’s location in Northern Virginia and proximity to Washington, D.C., combined with the assistance of the School of Business’s own Career Services staff and Student Success and Academic Services staff, students are also afforded exceptional opportunities to gain practical experience and global engagement opportunities to complement their academic coursework. Students admitted spring 2020 and later will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business degree.

Consumers increasingly seek professional advice on managing their finances from professionals with wide-ranging knowledge from taxes and estate planning to insurance and retirement planning to portfolio management. In a recent article title, Forbes described Financial Planning as “One of the Fastest Growing Careers” and noted that the field “is in Desperate Need of Young Talent.” The article went on to explain that the field is expected to grow at a 32% rate over the next decade according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics while the average growth rate for all occupations is 14%.” (Touryalai, 2012). The field of financial planning includes several certifications including the Certified Financial Planner certification (CFP) through the CFP Board and Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) certification through the AICPA. The national CFP Board and regional FPA leadership have reached out to Mason to work with us to develop a CFP-registered program in Financial Planning due to the significant need in our region for graduates with this specialization.

Geography, BS
The Geography, BS is designed to offer students the opportunity to study the integrated social and environmental processes that continuously shape and reshape the world we live in. This major provides students with broad training across the core subdisciplines of geography (human, physical, and GIScience), emphasizing application and technique-driven coursework, in addition to a rigorous science and mathematics curriculum. Students will find numerous opportunities for employment in both the private and public sectors, as well as in academia. Given their interdisciplinary approach and uniquely spatial perspective, geographers are well suited to address important local, regional, and global challenges in today's world.

The MFA in creative writing is a three-year residency program offering tracks in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Students in the program are members of a literary community that includes a student-organized program of readings, potluck dinners with faculty, three journals, a student-run publisher—Stillhouse Press—and the annual Fall for the Book literary festival. Resident faculty members include recipients of prestigious writing awards such as the Guggenheim Foundation, the Yale Series of Younger Poets, the Lannan Foundation, the Whiting Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others.

Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the 42 credit-hour Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program is designed to prepare students with the foundational public health knowledge and competencies to address the most pressing and emerging health problems and concerns nationally and globally. Graduates are prepared to work in a variety of employment sectors including local, state, and federal health and social service agencies, non-governmental and voluntary health organizations, health care, and private industry.

The B.S. in Tourism and Events Management degree prepares students to become future managers and leaders in one of the world's largest and most diverse industries: tourism, events and hospitality. Our Tourism and Events Management (TEM) major focuses on the management, planning, implementation, marketing, and evaluation of tourism, events, and hospitality businesses.
