Africana Studies

German

The German major provides, in a systematic fashion through its levels of instruction, a solid foundation in German grammar and vocabulary, comprehension and conversational skills (idioms and slang!), and German-language literature and culture in general. The literary focus reinforces the grounding in the nuances of the language and culture in compelling historical contexts up to the present, including the catastrophes of the first and second world wars and the Holocaust, the Cold War division through the Berlin Wall, and German Reunification in 1990.

The German major prepares students for study abroad or independent research in German-speaking countries (i.e., Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and for graduate study in other disciplines that encourage the acquisition of the German language beyond German Studies.

Provides instruction for dramatic writers across all platforms, offering deep study in professional writing practice in pre-professional settings, to prepare our graduates to excel in “writing rooms” for all manner of screen media, new and old.

Around the world, from the factory to the office to the internet, today's workplace is changing rapidly. These changes are dramatically affecting not only the ways that we work, but also the basic relationships among workers, between workers and labor unions, and between labor and management. Labor studies offers students a broad background in the multiple perspectives on – and different analytical approaches to – job and pay issues in an international context.

Why Labor Studies?
Labor studies can be a great asset for a wide range of careers in business (particularly human resources), forensic economics, government, higher education, journalism, labor and employment law, labor unions, mediation and arbitration, personal injury law, policy research, public relations, and social justice organizations.

Labor studies also prepares students for graduate programs in labor and industrial relations and in related areas of business, economics, education, journalism, law, media, public administration, and the social sciences.

Spanish
In a world brought ever closer by technology, trade, and transportation, fluency in a foreign language will make a tremendous difference in your earning power, how high you can climb the corporate ladder, and your ability to expand your professional and personal networks.

The study of languages will help you understand the world better, become more culturally sensitive, and train you to adjust to new environments quickly. Learning languages will improve your writing and train you to look at things from many points of view.

Fine Arts

This degree is for students who may be interested in a double major in areas such as education, marketing, computer science, or film. Students have the option of a general fine arts degree, or a specialization in design, painting, or sculpture-industrial design.

The Bachelor of Arts is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of biology and a strong liberal arts foundation. It is ideal for students planning to pursue graduate studies in another area, such as business, K-12 education, engineering or law.

Students may major in biology or urban ecology, and specializations are available in pre-health, cell/molecular biology, as well as marine and freshwater biology, ecology, secondary education and conservation biology, among others.

An INTO Hofstra Graduate Pathway program in Accounting will prepare you to enter your next semester of a master’s degree program at Hofstra University. Upon successful completion of the Pathway program and meeting university requirements for graduate admission, you may enter your next semester of graduate study at Hofstra University. This transition from an INTO Hofstra program to a university degree program is called progression.

Accounting
In most states, candidates for the CPA examination are required to have completed 150 semester hours of course work in order to be eligible for licensure. New York state currently requires 69 s.h. in business, of which 33 must be in accounting. This program, which is offered by the Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business, should enable students who have taken 39 undergraduate credits in business from an accredited institution, including at least six credits in accounting, to meet this requirement. Students without the equivalent of 39 credits in business are advised to consider the MBA in Professional Accountancy, which will satisfy all educational eligibility requirements for licensure. Students are advised to check with other state boards of accountancy for eligibility requirements outside of New York state.
