Japanese
In a world brought ever closer by technology, trade, and transportation, fluency in a foreign language will make a tremendous difference in your earning power, how high you can climb the corporate ladder, and your ability to expand your professional and personal networks.

The study of languages will help you understand the world better, become more culturally sensitive, and train you to adjust to new environments quickly. Learning languages will improve your writing and train you to look at things from many points of view.

This is a more intensive program, with more required coursework in fine arts and art history than the BA degree. In addition, students must select a specialization from one of the following areas:

• Painting
• Design and New Media and Industrial Design
• Photography
• Sculpture
• Ceramics

The classical tradition is not trapped in dusty old books on library shelves; it exists in the way we speak, the way we think, what we read, the music we listen to, and what we watch on television and in movies. From democracy to gender, from theater to athletics, from philosophy to the very way in which we understand history – the legacy of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds lives all around us.

The classics program will introduce you to authors, texts, and ideas that constitute the foundational literature of the Western tradition. As we become increasingly globalized, you will benefit from learning to read, critique, and analyze ancient Greek and Roman literature.

Classical Languages and Literatures
The concentration in Classical Languages and Literatures emphasizes language training in ancient Greek and/or Latin and provides the student with a strong background in classical literature and in related areas of study within classics – for example, ancient history, philosophy, art history, and the religious traditions of Greece and Rome and early Christianity.

American Studies

American Studies at Hofstra University is an interdisciplinary program for undergraduates looking forward to graduate work and careers in public service, law, higher education, and other fields associated with the social sciences and humanities.

The American Studies program is intensive and extensive; intensive because America is the focus of the program, and extensive because students become proficient in many academic disciplines. Courses in English, history, philosophy, and political science are all integral to the program

Geographic Information Systems
The BS in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is better suited for students with a mind for processing data. It offers technical-oriented, professional-grade training in GIS and geospatial technologies, and requires significant math, statistics, and natural science coursework. Unlike the major in geography, the GIS degree requires a minor or a second major in an area outside geography. Some popular choices among our GIS students include civil engineering, biology, journalism, and political science.

The Master of Arts (MA) in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Hofstra University prepares you for career advancement across a number of fields dealing with workplace productivity and behaviors, including human resources, training, management, consulting, coaching, and organization development. Research design, statistics, and psychology provide the foundation for advanced study in selection training, performance appraisal, worker motivation, and organization development. At Hofstra you will also gain valuable hands-on experience through internships at business and public agencies. Full-time students finish in as little as two years.

International Year One in Communication will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at Hofstra University. In our fully accredited Bachelor of Arts in Journalism program, you'll gain expertise in news writing and reporting, shooting and editing video, and designing mobile websites, using the latest industry tools and software.

Sports Media

You may pursue a Sports Media concentration with coursework in broadcast news writing and reporting, sports reporting, and television sports reporting and producing.

Theory/Composition Concentration
This concentration prepares student musicians for advanced study leading to careers in music theory, composition, or other allied areas of music.

Writing for the Screen
Provides instruction for dramatic writers across all platforms, offering deep study in professional writing practice in pre-professional settings, to prepare our graduates to excel in “writing rooms” for all manner of screen media, new and old.

An INTO Hofstra International Year One program in Natural Science will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at Hofstra University. Upon successful completion of the Pathway program and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your next semester of undergraduate study at Hofstra University. This transition from an INTO Hofstra program to a university degree program is called progression.

Physics
The BA in Physics is best for students who are interested in teaching at the middle or high school level or are interested in technical careers that don't require graduate degrees. This degree gives students the freedom to take courses in the liberal arts and pursue other minors. The BA also makes sense for students who will be pursuing careers in law, business, or medicine.
