Learn how to question and analyze the social, legal, political, historical, and economic factors that influence the media industry -- and apply this in-depth knowledge to a variety of career paths or advance study in fields such as law, management, politics, and education.

Students in the Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media Studies program pursue one of three concentrations:

• Urban and Suburban Communication
• Media, Law, and Policy

Media and the Law: Examine law and court rulings as they pertain to censorship issues, intellectual property, privacy rights, and social media content

Celebrity, Culture and Media: Critically analyze stardom and celebrity-making media industries

Privacy and Public Life in a Media Age: Explore issues of individual privacy, public life and civic engagement, online privacy, the surveillance environment, and more.

Art History
This degree offers classes in the study of art and architecture, from cave paintings to new media installations. Students learn about medieval art and works of the Italian Renaissance, the Romantic, Baroque, and Gothic Ages. They learn about artistic movements and how the study of art highlights issues related to politics, culture, and religion.

Labor Studies
Around the world, from the factory to the office to the internet, today's workplace is changing rapidly. These changes are dramatically affecting not only the ways that we work, but also the basic relationships among workers, between workers and labor unions, and between labor and management. Labor studies offers students a broad background in the multiple perspectives on – and different analytical approaches to – job and pay issues in an international context.

The BS major in Business Economics complements the students' economics training with an introduction to the functional areas of business studies. This degree program is particularly suited to the need of students of economics who intend to seek employment in business organizations.

Sustainability

Help solve the biggest challenges of our time, from social injustices to climate change, when you enroll in the MA in Sustainability program at Hofstra University. This program takes a balanced approach in trying to understand how to make developed countries more sustainable while also addressing the sustainability crisis in the developing world. With a focus on entrepreneurship, community development and sustainability management, the program teaches students to be part of the emerging green economy. Sports Media

You may pursue a Sports Media concentration with coursework in broadcast news writing and reporting, sports reporting, and television sports reporting and producing.

Geography - Geographic Information Systems
The BA in Geography with a specialization in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides general geography majors with a thorough grounding in this fast-growing, high-tech field.

Fine Arts

This degree is for students who may be interested in a double major in areas such as education, marketing, computer science, or film. Students have the option of a general fine arts degree, or a specialization in design, painting, or sculpture-industrial design.

Management

The major concentration enables students to establish a strong base of specialized knowledge in one of the areas of study represented in the Zarb School of Business. This complements the skills in the various functional areas of business, as well as the professional leadership and management orientation.           

Jewish studies courses explore all dimensions of Jewish life – past and present. Jewish studies majors look closely at post-Holocaust life and thought, Judaism and global politics, anti-Semitism, and other forms of racism. Students may focus on Jewish history throughout the world, the intercultural facets of diverse Jewish populations, interfaith dimensions, and Judaism and sexuality. They may look at how Jewish culture intersects with the media and the arts, including film, literature, television, theater, and the internet.
