Geographers have specific and valuable skills to tackle important societal challenges facing our planet. Climate change, population pressures, geopolitical conflicts, and natural disasters all need the expertise of geographers.

Geographers are citizens of the world. When solving problems, they value diversity, inclusiveness, and international perspectives.

Biology - Molecular and Cellular Biology
The bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology provides a solid foundation in the life sciences for students seeking careers in medicine, government, or entry-level positions in biotechnology as well as the pharmaceutical industry.

The degree also serves as a basis for graduate studies in biology. While the degree may satisfy many requirements for professional and graduate programs, it is important to consult the admission requirements for a particular program as early as possible. Additional coursework may be taken as electives to support later postgraduate work.

As a student in our program, you’ll dive deep into cultures, language, and artifacts from the ancient past. You’ll see firsthand how anthropology has major impacts on issues we face today, like poverty, health, and social justice.

Your learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Our program cares deeply about civic engagement. You’ll join other students who share your passion for helping others and apply your knowledge to real-world projects that make a positive difference.

The Anthropology field is diverse and offers you the opportunity to pursue your own curiosity. At Illinois State, we’ll give you a basic foundation in all the interesting aspects of Anthropology. From there, you can choose to focus on whatever interests you most.

English - Publishing Studies
The Publishing Studies sequence is designed to prepare graduates for careers in all types of publishing. Undergraduate students interested in nonprofit presses, journals, and scholarly publications are well suited for this sequence.

Skillsets acquired by completing the sequence includes proofreading, editing, design and layout, marketing, advertising, permissions, graphic work, record keeping, archiving, and bulk/distribution mailing. By providing a broad work experience, students not only build their portfolios, but also enter the marketplace with valuable and current skills.

Master of Music in Performance students are afforded intensive applied study with a professionally accomplished artist-teacher. Performance degrees are offered in all orchestral and band instruments, as well as in piano, guitar, and voice.

    The MM in Performance prepares you for a career in:

• Symphony orchestras
• Military ensembles
• Broadway
• Opera houses
• Teaching at the college level

    The MM in Performance curriculum includes:

• Applied music
• Music pedagogy and literature
• Analysis for Performers
• History
• Research
• Ensembles
• Electives which could include: Non-degree recitals, music technology, music history, music theory, music education, music therapy, music business, applied music, jazz studies and non-music courses
• A written comprehensive exam and a recital are required for graduation.

Studio Arts Drawing
The Wonsook Kim School of Art offers a comprehensive list of sequence options for a student interested in Studio Arts. The following are offered as areas of specialization: Ceramics, Drawing, Expanded Media, Glass, Printmaking, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Video, and Wood / Metal Design.

Following a first year foundations curriculum, students can choose a sequence within an individual studio. Within each sequence, faculty are actively engaged in introducing students to various technical skills and ideas specific to that discipline. The cohesive sequencing of courses within each studio area allows the student to build skills and knowledge towards a highly sophisticated level of work in that field of exploration.

At some time in our lives almost all of us have asked ourselves what is the right thing to do, and have wondered about the nature of human existence, the structure of reality, and our duties to each other, to animals, and to the environment. The study of philosophy provides the opportunity to address these and other profound topics and questions in a critical and systematic way.

Mathematics - Actuarial Science

The Actuarial Science graduate sequence is typically a 32-credit hour program. Most students can complete the program within two years of study beyond the bachelor's degree. We strongly encourage our Actuarial Science students to take related courses in economics, finance, insurance, and law.

Illinois State was one of only four institutions in the world to be honored with the Casualty Actuarial Society University Award in 2016. We are also one of very few universities in the U.S. honored by the Society of Actuaries as a Center of Actuarial Excellence.

Accounting - Career Specialty
The Accounting - Career Specialty sequence allows accounting majors to design an individualized plan of study that meets their career goals. In addition to the required accounting courses, students complete 12 hours in a specialized area with advice and approval of the accounting academic advisor and the department chair.
