Sociology

Our family, jobs, the law, economy, and government are some of the most influential social structures in our lives. Sociology helps us understand how these structures work so we can make the world better.

It examines data to get to the root cause of problems and issues, such as racism, divorce, poverty, and crime. Sociology also develops solutions that move us in a positive direction.

Being part of our program, you’ll join other students who share your passion for helping others. We’ll help you discover how you can be a major player in sparking positive change. You’ll learn about the power of social structures, how decisions get made, and how social movements gain traction. We also take a close look at cultures, diversity, and inclusion.

Our program applies academic concepts to the real world and helps you develop the crucial skills employers need.

Most of our students do not become Sociologists. Instead, you can find them doing important work in non-profits, law enforcement, business, health care, and more.

Geology studies how the Earth works and its history. It’s a field-based science that takes you outside the classroom and into nature. It offers plenty of variety by incorporating principles of chemistry, physics, biology, and math.

Professional geologists study earth processes like landslides, earthquakes, and rock formation. Understanding these activities is essential to sustaining life on Earth.

The Geology program at Illinois State gives you a strong foundation and awareness of these processes. Our traditional approach to teaching prepares you for graduate school or a career. Once you complete our program, you can get licensed and begin a career in the environmental, energy, and minerals industries.

Geography gives us an understanding of the world. It demonstrates how the physical and human systems on our planet work and connect to maintain life.

Geographers have specific and valuable skills to tackle important societal challenges facing our planet. Climate change, population pressures, geopolitical conflicts, and natural disasters all need the expertise of geographers.

Geographers are citizens of the world. When solving problems, they value diversity, inclusiveness, and international perspectives.

Spanish
The Spanish program at Illinois State University takes pride in offering small classes where students receive individualized attention and training in all aspects of language proficiency. Just as important, our undergraduates develop critical thinking skills and appreciation for diversity as they take courses in Hispanic cultures and literatures, as well as Spanish linguistics.

Our slate of offerings includes a sturdy base of fundamentals, on which students build their own program from a selection of electives of most interest to them. We also provide community-based service learning experiences and opportunities to participate in award-winning student organizations like our Spanish Club and Sigma Delta Pi, Illinois State's chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.

Finally, our flexible study-abroad programs in Latin America and Spain—students can participate for as little as a week over spring break or for a full year—supply great opportunities for language development, cultural immersion, broadening perspectives, and friendships that have the potential to last a lifetime.

The Agriculture Communications and Leadership sequence combines a broad background in agriculture and elements of education and leadership training with coursework and experiences in the field of communication to prepare students for a wide variety of opportunities in the agricultural press, corporate communications, extension education, and a variety of non-formal education careers.
