Anthropology

The journey to these answers is fascinating and Anthropology at Illinois State tackles these big questions head-on.

As a student in our program, you’ll dive deep into cultures, language, and artifacts from the ancient past. You’ll see firsthand how anthropology has major impacts on issues we face today, like poverty, health, and social justice.

Your learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Our program cares deeply about civic engagement. You’ll join other students who share your passion for helping others and apply your knowledge to real-world projects that make a positive difference.

The Anthropology field is diverse and offers you the opportunity to pursue your own curiosity. At Illinois State, we’ll give you a basic foundation in all the interesting aspects of Anthropology. From there, you can choose to focus on whatever interests you most.

The Applied Community and Economic Development (ACED) sequence is an interdisciplinary program that enables those who are passionate about social change through service to take their careers to the next level. The sequence is designed for returned Peace Corps Volunteers and students with other development experiences (e.g., AmeriCorps, nonprofit work).

Criminal Justice Sciences

• Earning a criminal justice degree empowers you to make positive contributions to society.
• The field offers plenty of variety that leads to an exciting and engaging career. Professionals enforce laws, protect citizens, rehabilitate offenders, help victims, and develop programs to help prevent crime.
• The criminal justice program at Illinois State examines policing, courts, and corrections. We do this with a social science point of view. As a student, you'll explore human behavior and take an in-depth look at the issues and circumstances that lead to crime. This gives you a well-rounded perspective and prepares you to be a leader for positive change.    
• You'll also gain all the skills you need to be successful in your career. We'll teach you how to interview, develop programs, promote community well-being, and analyze crime hotspots.

The Master of Music in String Pedagogy prepares students to become highly qualified and knowledgeable string teachers who will be prepared to pursue a career in teaching strings in a variety of settings or pursue a doctoral degree.

 The curriculum includes:

• String pedagogy and literature
• Professional practice
• Applied lessons on primary and secondary stringed instruments)
• And core music courses, i.e. music theory, history, and research methods
• Electives - chamber music, non-degree recitals, etc.

String Pedagogy students will gain critical professional practice experience working in the nationally recognized ISU String Project (large group, small group, and private lessons) as well as through teaching the MusicScores! curriculum at local Head Start preschool sites.

Interior Design

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a Master of Science or Master of Arts degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a sequence in Interior Design. The master’s program expands knowledge on creativity, sustainability, health and wellness, and evidence-based design.

Students can tailor this sequence to focus on theory and research and further develop their design skills in commercial design, cultural/global design, healthcare facilities design, and universal design. The sequence is suitable for both designers and architects who want to teach or become research practitioners, as well as those who want to advance their undergraduate degree as a practitioner in the field.

The Music Therapy sequence provides academic content and clinical experiences related to competencies outlined by the American Music Therapy Association.

Students who complete the Music Therapy degree are eligible to sit for the national board certification exam to obtain the credential MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified), which is necessary for professional practice.

Web Computing is a sequence in the Computer Science major.

Family and Consumer Sciences - Fashion Merchandising
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a Master of Science or Master of Arts degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a sequence in Fashion Design and Merchandising (FDM). The sequence is designed for professionals seeking advanced study in this area.

This sequence option is most appropriate for individuals interested in careers in the fashion design and merchandising field who have related degrees such as business, especially marketing, public relations, art, and design.

Family and Consumer Sciences graduate students with an interest in the FDM field can choose among seventeen courses that could be included as part of their graduate degree program. The courses offered are in two concentration areas; Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Product Design and Production.

Studio Arts Video
The Wonsook Kim School of Art offers a comprehensive list of sequence options for a student interested in Studio Arts. The following are offered as areas of specialization: Ceramics, Drawing, Expanded Media, Glass, Printmaking, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Video, and Wood / Metal Design.

Following a first year foundations curriculum, students can choose a sequence within an individual studio. Within each sequence, faculty are actively engaged in introducing students to various technical skills and ideas specific to that discipline. The cohesive sequencing of courses within each studio area allows the student to build skills and knowledge towards a highly sophisticated level of work in that field of exploration.
