Middle Level Teacher Education
The Middle Level Teacher Education program at Illinois State prepares candidates with a unique expertise in teaching young adolescents with a focus on grades 5-8.

As a Middle Level Teacher Education student, you are required to choose two subject areas in which to focus your studies. These concentration areas are supplemented with additional courses from related disciplines. Illinois State is the only middle level program in Illinois that requires candidates to have two content areas, giving our graduates greater flexibility in pursuing teaching opportunities and encourages graduates to consider cross-curricular teaching and learning experiences for their pupils.

Middle Level Teacher Education is a vibrant, innovative program that prepares the majority of highly trained candidates for Illinois middle level schools. New candidates become part of the 60-year history of middle level education at Illinois State.

Mathematics Teacher Education
As a student in the Mathematics Education program at Illinois State University, you will be challenged, tested, supported, and you will be rewarded.

You will be challenged to extend your knowledge and experience in mathematics through courses taken by students completing other sequences within the department's major, as well as through courses in education. You will become a mathematician, and you will become a teacher.

As a Mathematics Education student, you will be tested as you strive to meet the standards of excellence established for those becoming mathematics teachers.

Allied Health Professions
Exercise Science is the study of movement and the associated functional responses and adaptations the body makes as a result of movement/exercise. The Allied Health Professions (AHP) sequence gives you a well-rounded foundation in areas of Exercise Science, including physiology, biomechanics, and sports psychology.

AHP also offers advanced science coursework to prepare you for graduate studies in Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physician Assistant.

Mathematics - Statistics
Statistics is the science and art of making inferences from data, under conditions of uncertainty. The practice of Statistics requires not only the understanding of the statistical techniques, but also understanding of the problem requiring statistical analysis, whether it is in the liberal arts, the sciences, health sciences, or business.

Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity professionals protect data in computers and networks from crimes such as hacking and data theft.

Illinois State’s Cybersecurity major focuses on security basics, cryptography, ethical hacking, security defenses, and forensics. It covers current tools and techniques, and managing security risks.

To be successful in these areas, you'll get a background in programming and networking as well as basic knowledge of computer hardware and systems software.

The criminal justice graduate program at Illinois State can help you take your career to the next level.  

As a student in our program, you'll sharpen and further develop your skills. You'll also get a deeper perspective of the criminal justice field.

Our program is designed to give you the tools you need to advance in the field and be a stand out for competitive positions. The theories and principles we cover in the classroom can be applied to your current or future role in the field.

Overall, you'll gain a better understanding of policing, courts, and corrections. We study how each entity functions and operates. We also examine how they relate to each other, society, and the world.

Classes in our graduate program are small. This lets you work closely with other professionals and students. You'll engage in meaningful discussions on all the challenges and interesting topics in the criminal justice arena. This gives you a unique academic experience and introduces you to different perspectives.

As a mass media major, you will learn about the history of the media industries while practicing the business and creation of media in their coursework and hands-on experiences at our student media outlets:

Special Education - Specialist in Low Vision and Blindness

• Teachers of children with visual impairments work with learners who are blind or who have low vision, from preschool through high school.
• There is a severe shortage of teachers in this area. Many students in our Low Vision and Blindness sequence do not have difficulty finding a job after they graduate.

Anthropology
Anthropology studies humans from evolution to the present day. It thrives on curiosity and seeks to answer the questions we’ve always wondered, like:

• Where do we come from?
• What does it mean to be human?
• Why do people act the way they do?
• Why are things the way they are?

The journey to these answers is fascinating and Anthropology at Illinois State tackles these big questions head-on.

As a student in our program, you’ll dive deep into cultures, language, and artifacts from the ancient past. You’ll see firsthand how anthropology has major impacts on issues we face today, like poverty, health, and social justice.

Your learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Our program cares deeply about civic engagement. You’ll join other students who share your passion for helping others and apply your knowledge to real-world projects that make a positive difference.

The Anthropology field is diverse and offers you the opportunity to pursue your own curiosity. At Illinois State, we’ll give you a basic foundation in all the interesting aspects of Anthropology. From there, you can choose to focus on whatever interests you most.

• Archaeology studies humans through remains and artifacts left behind centuries ago.
• Anthropological linguistics is all about language and how it shapes culture and social structure.
• Cultural anthropology looks at the diverse human cultures of the past and present, including beliefs and social norms.
• Biological anthropology focuses on the evolution of humans and seeks to understand human diversity.

Sociology at Illinois State prepares you to change the world you live in.

Sociology studies people, organizations, and systems. In the field, this is known as social structures.

Our family, jobs, the law, economy, and government are some of the most influential social structures in our lives. Sociology helps us understand how these structures work so we can make the world better.

It examines data to get to the root cause of problems and issues, such as racism, divorce, poverty, and crime. Sociology also develops solutions that move us in a positive direction.

Being part of our program, you’ll join other students who share your passion for helping others. We’ll help you discover how you can be a major player in sparking positive change. You’ll learn about the power of social structures, how decisions get made, and how social movements gain traction. We also take a close look at cultures, diversity, and inclusion.

Our program applies academic concepts to the real world and helps you develop the crucial skills employers need.

Most of our students do not become Sociologists. Instead, you can find them doing important work in non-profits, law enforcement, business, health care, and more.
