Majoring in history lets you dive into the topics you are most excited about. Our program offers nearly 100 courses – from the Middle Ages to the American Revolution. You’ll get the opportunity to learn in small classes from a passionate faculty.

History at Illinois State offers an Accelerated Master’s Degree (AMD) sequence. This option gives high-achieving undergraduate students the opportunity to earn a master’s degree with only one year of additional study. Once enrolled in the major, you can contact your advisor to learn more.

At some time in our lives almost all of us have asked ourselves what is the right thing to do, and have wondered about the nature of human existence, the structure of reality, and our duties to each other, to animals, and to the environment. The study of philosophy provides the opportunity to address these and other profound topics and questions in a critical and systematic way.

General Computer Science
Computer scientists use computers to solve problems no one has successfully solved before. Programming is at the heart of what they do, writing and designing sophisticated code. Having a strong skill set in theory, math, logic, and science is also essential to their success.

The Computer Science program at Illinois State is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.

You can find a computer science job in a variety of exciting areas. Your options for a career path can include:

Computer Science at Illinois State gives you strong skills in software development. We also provide a background in computational theory, design, hardware and operating systems. You’ll learn how to use multiple programming languages on multiple operating systems.

Mathematics - Actuarial Science

The Actuarial Science graduate sequence is typically a 32-credit hour program. Most students can complete the program within two years of study beyond the bachelor's degree. We strongly encourage our Actuarial Science students to take related courses in economics, finance, insurance, and law.

Illinois State was one of only four institutions in the world to be honored with the Casualty Actuarial Society University Award in 2016. We are also one of very few universities in the U.S. honored by the Society of Actuaries as a Center of Actuarial Excellence.

Theatre Studies
The M.A. / M.S. degree program is designed for two populations of students:

• Students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. in Theatre and need a rigorous master's degree program to prepare them for further graduate study.
• Students who know they want to work professionally in theatre but are not yet certain which aspect of theatre best fits their interests.

A flexible program allows you to customize your course of study and build a solid foundation for further M.F.A. or Ph.D. studies, for teaching at the community college level, or for other professional careers in theatre, such as dramaturgy or literary management.

International Business
Illinois State University is the only public university in Illinois offering a major in International Business. If you have studied a foreign language in high school, if you want to major in business, if you are interested in the international expansion of business, then this is the right major for you!

International Business is an interdisciplinary program, combining core courses in general business and foreign languages with advanced courses in international business. Students choose a specific concentration from marketing, finance, insurance, management, business information systems, or accountancy. Advanced courses in business look not only at international activities in the different majors, but also at the way cultures affect business and the legal environments of different countries.

Physics

Explore the mysteries of the universe. From galaxies to particles, physicists study the world around us and beyond to explain how things work and exist.

The Physics major at Illinois State is broad. You’ll get a diverse curriculum that covers a variety of topics, including:

• Electromagnetism
• Quantum Physics
• Thermodynamics
• Materials Physics
• Statistical Mechanics
• Relativity

You’ll also focus on theoretical and experimental physics, computational physics, and mathematics

The Individualized sequence of the Interdisciplinary Studies major allows a student, with the help of a faculty sponsor, to design a specialized program of study not otherwise offered by the University. This is intended for the student whose specific interests cannot be accommodated within existing programs.

Some topics chosen by students include Classical Civilization, Three Dimensional Design, and International Public Relations. The Individualized sequence is typically a second or auxiliary major but may be proposed as a primary major.

Theatre - Acting
This is where your amazing journey to become a professional actor begins. Under the hands-on mentoring and rigorous demands of the professional acting faculty you will be challenged to become citizens of the world and courageous theatre artists.

Opportunities to hone your craft on the stage are numerous, and we pride ourselves on providing training to prepare you for a life in the theatre or wherever your life leads.

Join in the excitement of the Acting program in the School of Theatre and Dance, where we play boldly.

Recreation Management professionals plan, organize, and lead experiences for people with diverse backgrounds and interests. Experiences range from sports and crafts, to camping and other special interests. They also work in a variety of settings including parks, sport facilities, community centers, retirement villages, camps, and tourism attractions.

Students in this major put theory into practice by completing two internships. There are also opportunities to attend conferences, participate in clubs, and study abroad. These experiences help students develop a professional network.

Faculty in Recreation Management have won awards for teaching, research, and service. They also conduct and publish research as well as write industry-leading textbooks.
