Majoring in history lets you dive into the topics you are most excited about. Our program offers nearly 100 courses – from the Middle Ages to the American Revolution. You’ll get the opportunity to learn in small classes from a passionate faculty.

History at Illinois State offers an Accelerated Master’s Degree (AMD) sequence. This option gives high-achieving undergraduate students the opportunity to earn a master’s degree with only one year of additional study. Once enrolled in the major, you can contact your advisor to learn more.

Special Education - Specialist in Low Vision and Blindness

• Teachers of children with visual impairments work with learners who are blind or who have low vision, from preschool through high school.
• There is a severe shortage of teachers in this area. Many students in our Low Vision and Blindness sequence do not have difficulty finding a job after they graduate.

Theatre Studies

The Theatre Studies major provides you with a broad-based, hands-on education in theatre within the context of a liberal arts degree. After completing a strong core of theatre courses, you have the flexibility to choose specialty courses based on your interests and career orientation in the following areas:

• Stage directing
• Playwriting
• Theatre history
• Creative drama and puppetry
• Integrated performance
• Theatre management
• Film studies

You’ll receive a well-rounded educational experience, from academic pursuit in history, criticism, dramaturgy, and theory, to creative participation in the performing arts.

Mathematics - Statistics
Statistics is the science and art of making inferences from data, under conditions of uncertainty. The practice of Statistics requires not only the understanding of the statistical techniques, but also understanding of the problem requiring statistical analysis, whether it is in the liberal arts, the sciences, health sciences, or business.

Majors selecting this sequence receive broad training in Plant Biology. This sequence is designed for students seeking jobs with industries, the government and nonprofit organizations working with plants.

This sequence will also prepare students for graduate studies in Plant Biology.

Geography Social Science Teacher Education
Geography social science educators use their expertise to engage students in the global world. You’ll teach students about the people, places, environments, regions, and current events that shape human lives. You’ll also give students the tools they need to be productive, global citizens.

Geography social science education at Illinois State prepares you to teach high school social science courses. This includes:

Human Development and Family Science
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a Master of Science or Master of Arts degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a sequence in Human Development and Family Science. This sequence is most appropriate for individuals interested in careers in human development and/or family science who have a human/child development and family science degree or related undergraduate degrees such as psychology, sociology, and social work.

Career opportunities for graduates are in the areas of parent and family education agencies, non-profit organizations, community outreach services, residential- and child-care facilities, and other related areas. Positions could include working as case managers, program coordinators, family/parent educators, and administrators.

This program prepares students to make a positive impact on professional practices and policies in recreation management. It also helps them be successful leaders in recreation, parks, and tourism.

Students think conceptually and analytically while focusing on scholarship and a disciplinary study. Coursework applies theories and practices in the areas of management, marketing, and finance. At the end of the sequence, students complete a thesis, professional practice, or an independent study.

Recreation Administration offers top-notch learning facilities and small class sizes that encourage interaction and discussion. Faculty members are dedicated to supporting students and provide learning opportunities that connect students to real-world professional issues.

The Applied Community and Economic Development (ACED) sequence is an interdisciplinary program that enables those who are passionate about social change through service to take their careers to the next level. The sequence is designed for returned Peace Corps Volunteers and students with other development experiences (e.g., AmeriCorps, nonprofit work). The Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development coordinates these programs for Fellows, who spend an intense year on campus followed by an 11-month paid professional practice. ACED sequence students have a graduate assistantship in the fall and spring semesters on campus prior to field work.  Students pursuing this sequence receive a solid and relevant educational opportunity to pursue careers in community and economic development in the United States and around the world.
