International Year One program in Science will prepare you to enter your next term of a bachelor’s degree program at Oregon State University. Upon successful completion of International Year One and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your next term of undergraduate study at Oregon State University. This transition from an INTO OSU program to a university program is called progression.

Biological Data SciencesA degree in BDS provides a wealth of career and graduate school opportunities. Advances, such as next generation sequencing, drones, satellite imagery, and crowd sourcing, have transformed the life sciences by enabling data collection to occur at speeds and scales previously unimaginable. This paradigm shift in how researchers answer biological questions has resulted in an ever-increasing need for scientists with appropriate expertise in both biological and quantitative thinking.

Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is an interdisciplinary graduate major that first introduces students to the elements of the Earth system and the processes of mass and energy flow among them through a set of core courses. Students then pursue focused graduate course work and research in the following concentration areas, directed by their program committee.

Atmospheric Sciences
The field of atmospheric science is inherently interdisciplinary, requiring knowledge of physics, chemistry, biology, math, and computational methods. Increasingly, atmospheric science has been expanding to include studies of the effect of the climate on humans (e.g., health) and vice versa. Scientists can focus on field work, satellite data analysis, modeling, or lab work, though many atmospheric scientists use a variety of methods to understand the atmosphere, and they study processes ranging from global to microscale. Atmospheric scientists also study the relationships between the atmosphere and other climate system components (oceans, sea ice, vegetation, etc.).

Geophysics
Geophysics is concerned with physical processes within and on Earth, especially the internal physical constitution of the planet, and seismic, gravitational, geothermal, geoelectrical, geomagnetic phenomena and their relation to geological processes. The geophysics concentration offers graduate work toward MA, MS.

Oceanography
Oceanography, the application of the sciences to the study of the oceans, is an interdisciplinary environmental science concerned with all processes: biological, chemical, geological, and physical, as well as the interactions between the ocean. The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences graduate major offers MA, MS degrees with a concentration in oceanography.

Graduate studies in Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University emphasize the understanding of fundamental scientific and engineering principles to manage and solve environmental problems in natural and engineering systems. The instructional program is designed to develop strong analytical, design, and management capabilities in the application of biological, chemical and physical processes. Students are prepared for careers in consulting and design, environmental monitoring and management, or teaching and research. Research focuses on hazardous substances, environmental microbiology, fundamentals of transport processes in the environment, environmental chemistry, and groundwater and surface water resources.

The sixth most widely spoken language in the world, it is the second most widely learned foreign language, one of six working languages of the United Nations, and one of three procedural languages of the European Union, alongside English and German. French-speaking countries contribute to approximately 1/5th of the global economy, and French remains one of the most important diplomatic languages in international agencies and organizations, such as NATO, the World Health Organization, Interpol, the African Union, the International Olympic Committee, the World Trade Organization, the Red Cross, Médecins sans Frontières, etc.

Nuclear engineering focuses on enabling the peaceful use of the atom to provide electricity, process heat and make products that utilize radiation and radioactive materials.  Within the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) there are numerous opportunities for students to gain practical knowledge and experience in many areas of the field. The undergraduate or bachelor's program is broken into two sections: pre-engineering (two years) and pro-engineering (two years). It is the official language of six European countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Belgium. In addition, a bachelor's degree in German is a great stepping stone to graduate or law school.

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art education that prepares our students to be successful in engineering practice, advanced studies and research.

The computer science master's program provides advanced instruction beyond the undergraduate degree. It prepares students for careers in which a higher level of experience is required. The Ph.D. program prepares students for work in government or industry research laboratories or industry research laboratories or for careers at universities.

Additional areas of concentration may be arranged with other departments, for example, numerical analysis or computer algebra with the Department of Mathematics.

Industrial Engineering is the application of science, mathematics, and engineering methods to complex system integration and operation. Because the systems with which they work is so large and complex, industrial engineers (IEs) must develop expertise in a wide variety of disciplines, the ability to work well with people, and a broad, systems perspective.

All IE graduate students learn advanced methods of system integration and operation. As practitioners, MEng and MS graduates analyze and design facilities, material handing systems, manufacturing processes, information systems, and workstations. They also develop, apply, and oversee policies, procedures, and algorithms for production planning, inventory control, resource allocation and scheduling, quality assurance, and supply chain management.

Our public health program is built on the foundation of environmental health sciences, biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, and health management and policy.
