Study computer science, and you'll learn how to analyze a problem and find a computational solution. A BS in Computer Science can help you prepare for a career in software development, programming, research, network administration, web development, and much more.

With 48 hours of computer science courses, the Bachelor of Science (BS) offers students a more technical route than the Bachelor of Arts (BA), which requires 36 hours. Your coursework will include math and natural sciences, and core courses such as Discrete Structures, Automated and Formal Languages, and Programming Languages will give you a foundation in designing, building, and understanding computer-based systems, processes, and programs. Honors students may wish to research, write, and publish a formal scientific report or give an oral presentation. You'll even be able to earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach and apply your STEM knowledge in the classroom.

The BA in African American Studies is an interdisciplinary program examining African life and culture, both on the African continent and the diaspora. As a student, you will learn about the African and African American experience from different perspectives including English, history, political science, sociology, and public health.

Economics
If you study economics, you'll find there's actually a science behind how and why money gets spent in a society. At UAB, we'll get you ready for a career in research, consulting, or other industry.

To get prepared, you need a solid foundation in economics and decision-sciences, and that's exactly what our program will give you. Whether you're into data-driven analysis or the philosophy of decision science, we have a concentration that's perfect for you. Choose between mathematical economics, economic analysis and policy, or philosophy, politics, and economics. You will have the opportunity to make networking connections through organizations such as the Economics Club, International Business Association, and the Business Honors Program.

The BS in Public Health degree offers a broad overview of public health research and practice, introducing you to the multiple focus areas within public health (e.g., epidemiology, health behavior, health policy). Our students also gain hands-on experience working with community partners to improve the health of populations. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the BS in Public Health degree is designed to prepare students to:

• Identify key health challenges facing a community, based on evaluation and synthesis of public health information.
• Recognize the importance of evidence-based strategies to address public health challenges facing a community.
• Advocate for improved health in the community, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

Entrepreneurship
Many of the world’s leading companies began as student startups. Could one of your big ideas be next? At UAB, we can teach you how to turn your idea into a business, preparing you to be an entrepreneur who adapts to change, solves problems, and can thrive in all sorts of environments.

You see, before you have a big idea, you have to find the right problem to solve. Our curriculum is designed to show you how to fall in love with a problem so that you can find the right solution. Then we want you to take that solution and turn it into a viable business. To do this, you’ll take required courses like The Entrepreneurial Mindset, Entrepreneurial Strategy and Operations, and The Entrepreneurial Engagement Seminar, along with core business classes that cover the basics of marketing, finance, management, and more. You’ll even take Public Speaking to help you develop the skills to deliver that perfect pitch. We also want your education to be full of hands-on experience. Because how else will you really learn how to launch a business? You can pursue an internship with a local start-up, join a team of students exploring business ventures or collaborating on new ideas in one of UAB’s extracurricular programs, or complete a directed study in entrepreneurship.

It's no wonder, considering the lengths we go to in preparing you. Not only will we teach you the methods, history, and problems in philosophy, but we'll train you to apply this knowledge in the field. Best of all, because you have your own unique goals, we'll help you customize a curriculum to fit your needs. If you choose the ethics concentration, your coursework will concentrate on ethical issues and social issues.

We are looking for students ready to accept a challenge. Our goal is to give students the background to use mathematics in a variety of ways through training in mathematical rigor. This can enhance your ability to analyze and solve problems in all walks of life. We also emphasize the development of communication skills, something useful in the classroom and the workplace.
You have a solid grasp of the science of numbers, but now you want a more theoretical and abstract understanding of math. In this program, we can give you the problem-solving skills you need for a career in business, government, teaching, or another profession.

As a matter of fact, chances are your job will require knowledge from at least one of our core courses: algebra, analysis, geometry, numerical analysis, probability/statistics, and topology. If you're an undergrad, you may want to take a look at our accelerated master's option. After that, you and your faculty advisor can sit down together, review your career goals, and decide which specialty is better for you. You'll have two options. If you want to pursue an advanced degree, such as a PhD, you'll probably want to choose Plan I (thesis option). With this plan you'll complete both your required coursework and a thesis based on original research. Plan II (non-thesis option) is great for enriching your current career or starting one upon graduation.

Data Science
The Master of Science in Data Science program prepares graduate students for a professional career in the field of big data. Students will be equipped with fundamental knowledge and skills in data science and analytics, including:

• Machine learning,
• Modelling and quantitative analysis of massive datasets,
• Application of such technologies in strategic decisions,
• Critical skills for collecting and managing massive datasets, and
• Implementation of efficient solutions to real world big data problems using the most appropriate algorithmic techniques and software development tools available.

The program includes a set of core required courses and provides an opportunity for students to select from a wide range of electives related to data analytics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, business intelligence, and cyber security.

As a data scientist, you'll be using math, statistics, and programming skills to organize information and help businesses find solutions. Earning a master's in data science can help prepare you for a career as a software engineer, systems analyst, database administrator, research analyst, and more.

The MSBME is a researched-based degree that prepares you for entry into the doctoral program, biomedical industry, or professional schools. The program's primary research areas are:

• Biomedical imaging,
• Biomedical implants and devices,
• Cardiac electrophysiology,
• Multiscale computational modeling,
• Tissue engineering, and
• Regenerative medicine.
