Medical sociology looks at how a person's culture, feelings, and other social factors play a role in their health-care choices. A medical sociology degree can help prepare you for a career in health care, research, government data analysis, or other industries.

To begin your education, you'll take courses in medical sociology, medical social theory, and research methods/statistics. You'll then move on to electives on special topics that interest you, such as Death and Dying, Biology and Society, and Minority Aging. We know, some of these topics can get a little heavy—but they're important. And when you pair them with a pre-professional medical program, you'll have insights to social behaviors that can be invaluable to you throughout your career.

In finance, we'll teach you how to address an age-old problem: How do you make more money and grow your business? With your BS, we'll train you to add value to all sorts of businesses, including multinational banks, investment firms, and other companies in every industry.

But before you can build that wealth, you need the educational foundation required to fuel your success. That's why our program begins with an exploration of financial planning, investing, valuation, risk management and more. Art
Do you have a burning desire to express yourself through a variety of art media? Create art that transforms the world around you through a career in art direction, graphic design, museum curation, art conservation — or just about any other profession you can imagine.

From the moment you set foot on campus, we'll immerse you in the arts. Your coursework will teach you multiple disciplines of fine arts and design, and your access to UAB's Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts and the Birmingham Museum of Art will give you an intimate exposure to exhibits, displays, and special events. Choose an art studio concentration, and we'll encourage you to experiment with various styles. Concentrate in art history, and you'll focus on visual literacy and critical thinking.

Musical Theatre
As a musical theatre student, you'll learn about acting, voice, singing, music, movement, and dance. Whether you want to be an actor, singer, dancer, or another performance artist, we will show you the ins-and-outs of working in theatre in New York, Los Angeles, or elsewhere.

Your entry into musical theatre begins with an Introduction to Theatre or an Introduction to Dance, followed by coursework designed to further develop your dance skills. You'll begin to apply these skills through musical theatre performances, acting, theatre technology, and other experiences, such as our NYC Showcase course. Finally, you'll participate in at least four main stage productions per year, plus studio productions. In the end, you will have had both hands-on and classroom experience in many different areas of musical theatre.

Electrical Engineering
If electric currents, self-driving cars, and the latest smartphone apps get you amped, you should consider a degree in electrical and computer engineering. This degree can help you pursue a career in electric power, aerospace, computer engineering, consulting, defense, or the environment.

How do we do it? First, we'll hardwire you with a strong foundation of electrical engineering fundamentals. Your courses will cover topics such as analog and digital electronics, microprocessor applications, biomedical instrumentation, digital computer systems, software systems, electric utility power systems, digital control, industrial electronics, and machinery control. Then, through your capstone design experience, we'll plug you in with a team so you can prove your ability to design, develop, and test real solutions to engineering problems. You'll even be able to earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach and apply your STEM knowledge in the classroom.

The goals of the ABET-accredited B.S. in Electrical Engineering are to prepare graduates for the following:

• Approach problem solving with an engineering mind set.
• Grow professionally.

If you study economics, you'll find there's actually a science behind how and why money gets spent in a society. At UAB, we'll get you ready for a career in research, consulting, or other industry.

To get prepared, you need a solid foundation in economics and decision-sciences, and that's exactly what our program will give you. Whether you're into data-driven analysis or the philosophy of decision science, we have a concentration that's perfect for you. Choose between mathematical economics, economic analysis and policy, or philosophy, politics, and economics. You will have the opportunity to make networking connections through organizations such as the Economics Club, International Business Association, and the Business Honors Program.

Chemistry
The UAB Department of Chemistry provides students with the education and practical experience they need to participate in new scientific frontiers. From our unique peer learning and teaching program to our world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities, UAB Chemistry advances the boundaries of chemical scholarship and discoveries.
Chemistry connects the basic sciences with all of the applied sciences, including medicine and engineering. The foundations of the world’s economy in the next generation, including advanced materials, fuels, energy, nanomaterials, medicines, sensors, biotechnology, and genomics, will all have chemistry at their core. As a result, a degree in chemistry opens the door to a wide variety of careers, such as medicine, pharmacy, health professions, forensics, and research. Psychology
Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. With a thorough knowledge of psychology, you can offer great value in a wide variety of fields, including business, advertising, politics, law, education, and mental health counseling.

But first, you need to have a solid foundation of psychology theory in order to understand why people do what they do. That's why we begin your education with courses such as Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Brain, Mind, and Behavior. Then we'll take your education outside the classroom by giving you the chance to complete a research project or community service. Best of all, you could get the opportunity to gain real-world experience by participating in professional shadowing at a nearby treatment facility.

Immunology
Immunology is the study of the immune system, including the cells, organs, tissues, and the function the system plays in protecting humans against infectious diseases. It's the perfect foundation for a career in health care, biomedical research, or nearly anything that requires a white coat.

In fact, immunology is a collaborative field, and that's why your training will come from a broad spectrum of the scientific community. You'll take classes in biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, taught through both our medical school and biology department. And, we’ll help you prepare for a continued education or career in fields such as biochemistry, cell biology, cancer biology, infectious diseases, neurobiology, endocrinology, and cardiology.

Health Care Management
The Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management (HCM) was established at UAB in 1982. The degree offers a pathway into entry and mid?level management careers for some and serves as a foundation for success in graduate?level academic or professional degree programs for others.
A successful healthcare practice not only has great providers—doctors, nurses, optometrists, dentists, and the like—it has high quality management. Our Health Care Management degree helps provide a pathway for students who want to go into mid-level management careers or continue onto a graduate program.

We designed this program for aspiring leaders, like you, who want to improve healthcare systems, including in hospitals, managed care organizations, medical group practices, consulting firms, government agencies, non-profits, and other companies in ambulatory, long-term care, insurance, and pharmaceutical. We have several concentrations to choose from depending on your academic work, current professional status, personal interests, and future goals. You'll also have the opportunity to earn your master's in occupational therapy, health informatics, or health-care quality and safety through our fast-track program.
