As a high-school teacher, you can have a tremendous influence over a person during some of their most formative years. In fact, what you teach someone can last a lifetime. At UAB, we can teach you the skills needed to become a high school educator.

To get started, you must first decide what subject you want to teach: science, social studies, math, or English language arts. Then, you'll learn critical skills, competencies, and instructional strategies from our nationally-renowned faculty. We'll also give you hands-on experience through internships and practicums. Finally, if you're a future math or science teacher, you may want to enroll in UABTeach, our four-year program that lets you earn a STEM degree while also qualifying for certification as a classroom teacher.

Industrial Distribution
The Charles and Patsy Collat Industrial Distribution (ID) Program is a rare degree program that puts you at the center of one of the fastest growing fields in business.  Distribution professionals manage the flow of materials from manufacturers to distributors to customers- which means they play a key role in propelling the economy forward by supplying the building blocks for the products America creates and the world buys. Industrial distributors supply government, industry, and manufacturers, with products necessary for business and health care operations.

Graduates are prepared for careers with manufacturers or distributors in technical industries for sales engineering, logistics, marketing, inventory and purchasing positions as well as branch management.

Civil Engineering

In our program, we can teach you how to design, construct, and evaluate all kinds of infrastructure as a civil engineer.

Your road to a career will begin with an intensive curriculum that includes structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, and construction engineering management. Plus, you can choose the Sustainable Engineering Design and Concentration to earn more experience in this growing area of civil engineering. Best of all, we offer study-abroad trips so you can earn academic credit while exploring a new culture. Interested in teaching? You can earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach. The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers a broad-based major in civil engineering. The program covers:

Have you ever wondered how you can harness your reading, writing, and language skills into a lucrative career? With an English degree from UAB, you can learn how powerful expression and communication can be in the worlds of media, law, medicine, and many more.

In fact, practically every job you can imagine depends on communication. That's why our program is so diverse. You can choose to learn the science behind the English language, study the greatest authors of all time, hone your creative writing skills, or prepare to write in a professional setting. You'll also have the opportunity to write for a student publication, complete a capstone project, work as an intern, or research for a thesis in the English honors program.

But first, you need to have a solid foundation of psychology theory in order to understand why people do what they do. That's why we begin your education with courses such as Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Brain, Mind, and Behavior. Then we'll take your education outside the classroom by giving you the chance to complete a research project or community service. Best of all, you could get the opportunity to gain real-world experience by participating in professional shadowing at a nearby treatment facility.

In addition to your core classes, you can choose concentration classes in forensic accounting or information technology. Genetic and Genome Sciences
Genetics is a fundamental aspect of all biological processes and affects all facets of our lives. Understanding and analyzing the function and behavior of genes is critical to improving the quality of life for human beings and has far-reaching implications for our entire global ecosystem.

Traditionally viewed as a discipline within biological sciences, today, the study of genetics and genomics is an interdisciplinary exercise that involves multiple fields, including computational sciences and information systems.
It is also a rapidly advancing field in research and training. With the ever-increasing use of genetic tests, and of whole genome sequence information for disease diagnostics, there is a high demand for qualified and experienced genetics researchers and health-related professionals. The UAB Undergraduate Program in Genetics and Genomic Sciences (GGS) is designed to nurture a new generation of UAB undergraduates who will be ideally equipped to pursue and succeed in a career in academic or government research, medicine, biotechnology in industry, and other health-related sciences.

You can even do fieldwork at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on Alabama's Gulf Coast or in the Bahamas, Costa Rica, the Galápagos Islands, or Antarctica. Once you've completed your program track—Integrated Biology, Marine Science, or Molecular Biology—you'll have the prerequisites you need for medical, dental, optometry, or pharmacy school.  You can even get certified to teach biology or general science through the UABTeach program.

Immunology
Immunology is the study of the immune system, including the cells, organs, tissues, and the function the system plays in protecting humans against infectious diseases. It's the perfect foundation for a career in health care, biomedical research, or nearly anything that requires a white coat.

In fact, immunology is a collaborative field, and that's why your training will come from a broad spectrum of the scientific community. You'll take classes in biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, taught through both our medical school and biology department. And, we’ll help you prepare for a continued education or career in fields such as biochemistry, cell biology, cancer biology, infectious diseases, neurobiology, endocrinology, and cardiology.
