Computer Science
Study computer science, and you'll learn how to analyze a problem and find a computational solution. A BS in Computer Science can help you prepare for a career in software development, programming, research, network administration, web development, and much more.

With 48 hours of computer science courses, the Bachelor of Science (BS) offers students a more technical route than the Bachelor of Arts (BA), which requires 36 hours. Your coursework will include math and natural sciences, and core courses such as Discrete Structures, Automated and Formal Languages, and Programming Languages will give you a foundation in designing, building, and understanding computer-based systems, processes, and programs. Honors students may wish to research, write, and publish a formal scientific report or give an oral presentation. You'll even be able to earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach and apply your STEM knowledge in the classroom.

Biomedical Sciences
The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences (BMD) program prepares you for health-related graduate and professional study or for entry into one of the fastest growing occupational sectors.
Are you looking for a flexible and solid undergraduate degree that will prepare you for today’s fastest growing occupational sector? Then BMD is for you.
You will tailor your degree to fit your academic and career goals. The program, which includes coursework in physiology, pharmacology, clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology and immunology, plus the pathological basis of disease, includes six elective courses that you choose based on your individual health-related educational track.

The Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) program is divided into two tracks:

• The Thesis Track program is designed to prepare students to pursue doctoral-level study in criminology, criminal justice, or a related field. Students selecting this option are required to complete a thesis project under a faculty adviser.
• The Non-Thesis Track program is geared toward working professionals and designed to provide to them advanced training in such areas as research methods, program evaluation, and policy analysis. Students selecting this option are required to complete a Demonstration Project and are strongly encouraged to complete a field placement (Internship).

Social Work

If so, the UAB Department of Mechanical Engineering offers Master of Science program that may be just what you're looking for to enhance your academic or professional engineering credentials.

Mechanical engineering is a broad-based discipline, and graduate students will have opportunities to explore a number of research areas where they will work alongside nationally and internationally known faculty mentors. The ME department offers a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree, including both Thesis and non-Thesis options.

The MS in Biotechnology program provides a more direct route to a career in the industry by focusing on mastering current techniques used in biotechnology coupled with the business fundamentals necessary for successful product development. This degree offers a viable alternate path for graduates of science programs into practical and lucrative job tracks rather than into programs that take much longer to complete and are often too narrowly focused in specific disciplines.

To prepare you for your career, we've designed a program that you can tailor based on your interests and goals. We have four concentrations for you to choose from, including construction engineering management, in which you can learn about cost and revenue estimating, risk, and more. You can also specialize in construction engineering management to learn about cost and revenue estimating, risk, and more. Plus you can choose a thesis option, non-thesis option with an emphasis on research and design, or a non-thesis option with an emphasis on sustainable engineering design. But no matter which you choose, you're going to need to both complete a comprehensive exam and defend either your research project or thesis in order to graduate. Finally, we're going to offer you the opportunity to earn a certificate in environmental, structural, sustainable, and transportation engineering, or engineering construction management. In the end, you'll have the best chance at an education designed to meet your specific career goals.

Materials Engineering
The world is made out of all sorts of stuff—metals, plastic, glass, stones, almost anything you can think of—and materials engineers not only study how to make that stuff but also why we use it. As a grad, you can go on to work in aerospace, chemical, automotive, metals casting, biomedical, or microelectronics fields.

For success in this field, we believe hands-on experience is invaluable. That's why we complement your classes with labs, research, internships, and co-ops. We offer a general curriculum, or you can focus on tissue engineering and implants, metals and automotive materials, or the chemical makeup of polymers. Plus, you can enrich your experience with additional research and seminars in our honors program, or even get a certification to teach general science through the UABTeach program. Best of all, you'll have access to our state-of-the-art 20,000 square-foot Materials Processing and Development (MPAD) facility.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers undergraduate students a major in materials science and engineering, covering a wide spectrum of the materials world, with concentrations in biomaterials, metallurgy, and polymer matrix composites.

Besides classroom learning, our students are trained with technical skills through laboratory classes, research experiences in laboratories led by faculty, and internships and co-ops in industry. Students develop their professional skill by active engagement with the UAB student chapters of various professional societies and participating in outreach activities. After graduation, our students either start professional careers or pursue graduate studies.

Numerous of our Master of Public Administration graduates have gone on to serve in government—one was a major party candidate in Alabama's 2018 governor race. Complete the program, and you could be next.

An M.S. in civil engineering can serve as a step toward a Ph.D. in engineering, or it can provide the experience and credentials needed to increase competiveness in the job market. The program can be completed in as few as two years, though the typical student takes two courses per term for five semesters.
