The UAB Department of Physics offers a rigorous but flexible undergraduate program that emphasizes both depth and breadth in order to meet the demands of tomorrow’s technology-based research and education global scenes.

In order for our students to develop the skills that employers desire and that Grand Challenge interdisciplinary research problems demand, the UAB Department of Physics offers five different undergraduate tracks designed to help students achieve their career goals not only in traditional physics, but also in closely-related engineering, STEM, teaching, computational, and medical fields.

Economics
If you study economics, you'll find there's actually a science behind how and why money gets spent in a society. At UAB, we'll get you ready for a career in research, consulting, or other industry.

To get prepared, you need a solid foundation in economics and decision-sciences, and that's exactly what our program will give you. Whether you're into data-driven analysis or the philosophy of decision science, we have a concentration that's perfect for you. Choose between mathematical economics, economic analysis and policy, or philosophy, politics, and economics. You will have the opportunity to make networking connections through organizations such as the Economics Club, International Business Association, and the Business Honors Program.

Philosophy
As a philosophy student, you won't just study ideas and thoughts related to these questions, you'll study critical thinking, problem solving, and how to analyze and argue. We want this foundation to help you excel in fields such as medicine, law, journalism, politics, business, and more.

Interested in graduate school? According to the Educational Testing Service, philosophy majors earn higher GRE scores than students from any other discipline. It's no wonder, considering the lengths we go to in preparing you. Not only will we teach you the methods, history, and problems in philosophy, but we'll train you to apply this knowledge in the field. Best of all, because you have your own unique goals, we'll help you customize a curriculum to fit your needs. If you choose the ethics concentration, your coursework will concentrate on ethical issues and social issues.

Information Systems are the backbone of modern organizations. With today’s speed of innovation, organizations need help keeping up with emerging technologies and understanding how different applications can be leveraged to accomplish enterprise objectives. The amount of information generated each day can be overwhelming. Organizations need the best technological solutions to make sense of the data, and individuals who know how to develop them are in high demand, unlike some other computer related fields. Information Systems requires a blend of technical expertise and business savvy. The program provides a solid foundation in business information systems and business knowledge with a well-rounded business curriculum as well as specialized courses in information systems that deliver a broad understanding of how to leverage technology to achieve business goals.

This program is ideally suited for those who enjoy working with technology and with people. Graduates will be uniquely qualified to serve as liaisons between technical teams and management, and to facilitate collaborative approaches to solve business problems.

 Engineering Design
In the world of engineering design, you might be responsible for creating the next new camera phone, innovating a self-driving car — practically anything. The possibilities are endless, and at UAB, you can tailor your major to help you succeed in almost any aspect of engineering design.
So what exactly goes in a degree in engineering design? For one, our program includes a 15-hour engineering design and innovation core as the backbone to your education. It’s a three-course progression in engineering design as well as a two-semester capstone project. Plus we’re going to load your noodle up with all the fundamental math, science, physics, and engineering skills that you’ll need to embark on your career.
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with a major in Engineering Design offers undergraduates a unique opportunity to earn an engineering degree tailored to their interest, with an emphasis on innovation and design.
The Engineering Design program is intended for students whose academic/scientific interests aren’t aligned with an existing engineering discipline or limited to one engineering discipline. The ideal student will be highly adaptable to different learning environments, prepared to work in interdisciplinary teams, and adept at hands-on learning.

A business can't succeed without the right employees, and at UAB, we can teach you how to build, manage, and grow a successful team. With a degree in human resource management, you can choose to work with businesses big and small and in many different industries.

In fact, there are very high standards for this field set by the Society for Human Resource Management, and we've designed our curriculum specifically to meet those standards. That's why, in addition to your core and elective coursework, we're going to provide you with the opportunity to participate in an internship, research project, or study-abroad trip. Effective managers are vital to the success of every organization-from small start-up companies to multi-national corporations.  Why? Because managers are the ones who skillfully coordinate and control the activities of the organization to achieve business goals.  At the core of good management is the need to know how to attract, motivate and reward the best and brightest people.  Management is also about effective alignment.  Organizations are complicated systems that rely on the effective coordination of people, technology and organizational processes to be successful.  Managers drive this alignment through their skills of strategic thinking, strong communications and employee motivation to create business value.

Today’s business environment requires graduates who can effectively evaluate and make decisions, lead employees and manage resources. Management is ideal for people who like big picture thinking, can understand how processes work, have a passion for problem-solving and who can multi-task effectively to help create value for the organization. Management is also a great place to start for entrepreneurs interested in starting their own businesses.

As a criminal justice student, you'll not only learn about crime and justice—you'll also gain critical skills in analyzing and communicating. In fact, with your degree, you can pursue careers in law enforcement – including cyber crime investigation – and social services, business, and education.

We’ll train you in the areas of corrections, criminology, forensic science, juvenile justice, law, policing, computer forensics, and other positions. Your courses will teach you the theories of crime and delinquency, as well as the logic, procedures, and ethical foundations associated with our nation's justice system. Finally, during your senior year, we'll set you up with an internship at an agency such as the FBI, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, or the Jefferson County Family Court.

We've developed a research-intensive curriculum, with unique hands-on experiences and mentorship from our faculty. As you earn your degree, you'll have the option of choosing a path with or without a thesis. With a thesis, you’ll take more mathematics courses, which can be beneficial if you want to pursue a doctoral degree. If you'd rather do a research or design project, you can do so with an emphasis in research/design or technology/engineering management. No matter what you choose, you will have an opportunity to explore a number of research areas.
