Social Work

Then you'll complete a practicum, giving you real-world experience working at an actual social service agency. Because, when you graduate, we want you to have everything you need to start a career in social work. That means you can do more than make a living for yourself—you can change lives. You can make a difference.

Psychology
Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. With a thorough knowledge of psychology, you can offer great value in a wide variety of fields, including business, advertising, politics, law, education, and mental health counseling.

But first, you need to have a solid foundation of psychology theory in order to understand why people do what they do. That's why we begin your education with courses such as Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Brain, Mind, and Behavior. Then we'll take your education outside the classroom by giving you the chance to complete a research project or community service. Best of all, you could get the opportunity to gain real-world experience by participating in professional shadowing at a nearby treatment facility.

Information Systems are the backbone of modern organizations. With today’s speed of innovation, organizations need help keeping up with emerging technologies and understanding how different applications can be leveraged to accomplish enterprise objectives. The amount of information generated each day can be overwhelming. Organizations need the best technological solutions to make sense of the data, and individuals who know how to develop them are in high demand, unlike some other computer related fields. Information Systems requires a blend of technical expertise and business savvy. The program provides a solid foundation in business information systems and business knowledge with a well-rounded business curriculum as well as specialized courses in information systems that deliver a broad understanding of how to leverage technology to achieve business goals.

This program is ideally suited for those who enjoy working with technology and with people. Graduates will be uniquely qualified to serve as liaisons between technical teams and management, and to facilitate collaborative approaches to solve business problems.

At UAB, we can give you the engineering, design, and planning background you need to be a leader in civil engineering.

To prepare you for your career, we've designed a program that you can tailor based on your interests and goals. We have four concentrations for you to choose from, including construction engineering management, in which you can learn about cost and revenue estimating, risk, and more. Plus you can choose a thesis option, non-thesis option with an emphasis on research and design, or a non-thesis option with an emphasis on sustainable engineering design. But no matter which you choose, you're going to need to both complete a comprehensive exam and defend either your research project or thesis in order to graduate. Finally, we're going to offer you the opportunity to earn a certificate in environmental, structural, sustainable, and transportation engineering, or engineering construction management. In the end, you'll have the best chance at an education designed to meet your specific career goals.

Clinical labs need people like you to run tests and analyze data in order to give patients accurate diagnoses. We can prepare you for a career working in a hospital lab, industry, research lab, or elsewhere.

To earn the MS in Clinical Laboratory Science, you'll complete a rigorous curriculum that includes a set of rich, diverse learning experiences under faculty that are committed to your success. The comprehensive program includes courses such as Body Fluids, Laboratory Techniques, Hematology, Infectious Diseases, and Clinical Microbiology, among others. To give you a valuable, hands-on experience, you'll have lab offerings with most of your courses. In addition, you'll take professional-development classes that'll help you adapt with this evolving field. Finally, you'll have opportunities to work at Birmingham-area clinics, giving you crucial, real-world experience on your resume by the time you graduate.

Materials Engineering
The world is made out of all sorts of stuff—metals, plastic, glass, stones, almost anything you can think of—and materials engineers not only study how to make that stuff but also why we use it. As a grad, you can go on to work in aerospace, chemical, automotive, metals casting, biomedical, or microelectronics fields.

For success in this field, we believe hands-on experience is invaluable. That's why we complement your classes with labs, research, internships, and co-ops. We offer a general curriculum, or you can focus on tissue engineering and implants, metals and automotive materials, or the chemical makeup of polymers. Plus, you can enrich your experience with additional research and seminars in our honors program, or even get a certification to teach general science through the UABTeach program. Best of all, you'll have access to our state-of-the-art 20,000 square-foot Materials Processing and Development (MPAD) facility.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers undergraduate students a major in materials science and engineering, covering a wide spectrum of the materials world, with concentrations in biomaterials, metallurgy, and polymer matrix composites.

Besides classroom learning, our students are trained with technical skills through laboratory classes, research experiences in laboratories led by faculty, and internships and co-ops in industry. Students develop their professional skill by active engagement with the UAB student chapters of various professional societies and participating in outreach activities. After graduation, our students either start professional careers or pursue graduate studies.

Electrical Engineering
If electric currents, self-driving cars, and the latest smartphone apps get you amped, you should consider a degree in electrical and computer engineering. This degree can help you pursue a career in electric power, aerospace, computer engineering, consulting, defense, or the environment.

How do we do it? First, we'll hardwire you with a strong foundation of electrical engineering fundamentals. Your courses will cover topics such as analog and digital electronics, microprocessor applications, biomedical instrumentation, digital computer systems, software systems, electric utility power systems, digital control, industrial electronics, and machinery control. Then, through your capstone design experience, we'll plug you in with a team so you can prove your ability to design, develop, and test real solutions to engineering problems. You'll even be able to earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach and apply your STEM knowledge in the classroom.

The goals of the ABET-accredited B.S. in Electrical Engineering are to prepare graduates for the following:

The Charles and Patsy Collat Industrial Distribution (ID) Program is a rare degree program that puts you at the center of one of the fastest growing fields in business.  Distribution professionals manage the flow of materials from manufacturers to distributors to customers- which means they play a key role in propelling the economy forward by supplying the building blocks for the products America creates and the world buys. Industrial distributors supply government, industry, and manufacturers, with products necessary for business and health care operations.

Graduates are prepared for careers with manufacturers or distributors in technical industries for sales engineering, logistics, marketing, inventory and purchasing positions as well as branch management.

We are looking for students ready to accept a challenge. Our goal is to give students the background to use mathematics in a variety of ways through training in mathematical rigor. This can enhance your ability to analyze and solve problems in all walks of life. We also emphasize the development of communication skills, something useful in the classroom and the workplace.
You have a solid grasp of the science of numbers, but now you want a more theoretical and abstract understanding of math. In this program, we can give you the problem-solving skills you need for a career in business, government, teaching, or another profession.

As a matter of fact, chances are your job will require knowledge from at least one of our core courses: algebra, analysis, geometry, numerical analysis, probability/statistics, and topology. If you're an undergrad, you may want to take a look at our accelerated master's option. After that, you and your faculty advisor can sit down together, review your career goals, and decide which specialty is better for you. You'll have two options. If you want to pursue an advanced degree, such as a PhD, you'll probably want to choose Plan I (thesis option). With this plan you'll complete both your required coursework and a thesis based on original research. Plan II (non-thesis option) is great for enriching your current career or starting one upon graduation.

Students who successfully complete an INTO UAB Graduate Pathway program in business are assured progression to a UAB graduate business degree program upon submission of additional required application materials. Master of Business Administration
The UAB MBA program is decision-oriented, focusing on key aspects of modern administration, and it seeks to prepare graduates for leadership roles in business, industry, government, or social services. In order to deal effectively with increasingly complex problems of organizations, managers require training in sophisticated analytical techniques, an appreciation for the behavioral facets of management, and an ability to anticipate and adapt to changes in the organizational environment.
