Food systems is the study of the food supply chain, which includes production, processing, distribution, and consumption as well as waste. Drivers of the food system include culture, economics, policy, and marketing, and the collective impact on outcomes including human and environmental health, food insecurity, and community food security. The Nutrition and Food Systems degree is an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complexities of the food system from production to consumption and impact on human health, as well as challenges faced by the food system to develop sustainable solutions for producing, processing, delivering, and consuming safe, culturally desirable, nutritious, and economically and environmentally sustainable food. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is committed to training emerging leaders who will address grand challenges facing humanity, including management and preservation of precious and finite natural resources, and finding solutions to feed over 9 billion people by 2050.

Learning Outcomes

• Effectively communicate diet and nutrition information/knowledge to diverse populations

Gain an understanding of global interactions between nations for a career involved in human rights, diplomacy, security, and war and peace. Political science is the study of government, public policy and the political behavior of individuals and groups. Students in the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science program with an emphasis in International Relations graduate with a broad knowledge of the foundations, history and dynamics of politics in the U.S. and around the globe. Most importantly, they understand the unique relationships between the U.S. and other countries. Students take courses in political theory, foreign affairs, socio-political issues, and ideas and methods. They're also encouraged to acquire a double major or a minor in a secondary language. Fieldwork includes opportunities to intern at nonprofit organizations and government agencies.

The Bachelor of Science in Biology provides a strong foundation in modern biology. The Biomedical Sciences emphasis is for students dedicated to the advancement of science and who plan to pursue careers in biomedical research, medicine and other health professions. The program of study includes training in biological systems with a focus on anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetics and genomics. The department is renowned for its groundbreaking research in specialized areas, including genetics and genomics, population biology and ecology. Big data is changing the world. Offered through the Department of Mathematics, this degree prepares you to take part in the data revolution. Students earning a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Statistics and Data Science will have a solid foundation in mathematics. Yet they focus on the capture, maintenance, processing, analysis and communication of data through immersion in courses in probability, statistics, data science and computer programming. Undergraduates also must complete a minor outside the Department of Mathematics. The B.A. and B.S. allow students to pursue graduate degrees or careers in analytics, risk assessment, finance, and other math- and science-related fields.

Food studies is a rapidly growing field in North America as the demand increases for experts in food-related policy, food justice and food culture. Students in this new Bachelor of Arts program (offered in collaboration with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences) prepare to become change-makers in the world's food system through an interdisciplinary approach to examining food in all its dimensions: cultural, economic, health and environmental.
