Middle East and North African Studies employs an interdisciplinary approach to learning about all aspects of this region. The Bachelor of Arts focuses on instruction in the principal languages of the area (Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew) and includes coursework in religion, political science, history, literature, geography, sociology, archaeology, linguistics and architecture. Students seek degrees in this department out of a genuine interest in this part of the world, often on a professional path to government service, academics, a position in international business or as preparation for advanced study in this or other fields.

Learning Outcomes

• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to identify the major historical periods, figures, and movements that have shaped the Middle East and North Africa from 600 C.E. to the present.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to compare and contrast the various social, cultural, religious, geographic and linguistic milieus of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to critically evaluate popular, political and/or media discussions of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to analyze and synthesize information from primary and secondary sources in order to develop and write a research paper.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to achieve proficiency at the intermediate level in one of the languages of the Middle East and North Africa (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish). Communicative proficiency is defined in accordance with the Standards for foreign language learning as developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These are further analyzed below: i. To communicate in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) languages, both orally and in writing, by engaging in interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational communication activities (Communication). ii. To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the MENA cultures through language activities such as written essays and oral presentations on cultural topics (Culture). iii. To make meaningful cross-cultural comparisons between two or more of the MENA cultures (Comparisons).

Immerse yourself in the culture of past, present and future Japan. Students in the Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies program pick from one of two emphases: language or culture. The Japanese Culture Intensive emphasis introduces students to the traditions, history, culture and religion of Japan, including some instruction in the Japanese language. Understanding the nuances of this nation in the third-largest economy in the world and is essential for students who wish to work internationally or gain a global mindset. Skills acquired include articulate communication, critical thinking, research and argument construction. Students are encouraged to pursue opportunities to study abroad in Japan.

Biomedical engineers develop medical technologies in areas such as biomaterials, biosensors, wearable devices and imaging systems to improve people's lives. The Biomedical Engineering Bachelor of Science is geared to students looking to combine strong engineering skills and knowledge of biological sciences. Individualized degree plans are organized around three main areas of study: biomaterials to support or replace damaged tissue, biomechanics for supporting anatomical movement, and biosensors and microtechnologies to improve disease detection and management. Most Biomedical Engineering majors do high-profile research with faculty and complete sponsored senior design projects, which help launch their careers or entry into medical or graduate school. The B.S. in Biomedical Engineering is an approved pre-med program.

The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Law is an interdisciplinary major that offers a comprehensive perspective of current social, economic and political issues. The content draws on courses from philosophy, politics and economics, but the heart of the program is a set of specialized core courses designed exclusively for majors. These are taught in small classroom settings by distinguished faculty with appointments in philosophy, political science, economics and law. Students learn to analyze the fundamental values that shape the economic, political and legal domains; develop an understanding of the moral and historical foundations of economic institutions and political-legal structures; and gain logical thinking and conceptual analysis skills.

Communities are always in need of individuals who have expertise on how to make learning accessible for all. Graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Literacy, Learning and Leadership fill lead roles in a wide range of fields, including volunteer programming, nonprofit work, youth services, and community education and outreach. The undergraduate experience teaches students how to design traditional and digital instruction that turns complex ideas into understandable and accessible content and empowers individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage in learning outside of the traditional school setting. The safety, sustainability and efficiency of structures depend on architectural engineers who are passionate about every detail of construction. Architectural engineers design systems that complete the built environment. They ensure the structural integrity and resilience of buildings and the comfort and health of those who occupy them. Students in the Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering program develop a solid foundation in areas such as structural health monitoring and analysis, materials processing, and water and energy efficiency. Undergraduates gain real-world experience through specialized projects, architectural studio courses and paid internships. Students earning a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with an Applied Mathematics emphasis engage in interdisciplinary study with core mathematics courses and a minor that is independent of the Department of Mathematics. If you have a strong drive and entrepreneurial spirit, set your aspirations on the highly lauded, one-year New Venture Development Program.  Students wishing to add a second major to another course of study at the University of Arizona's Eller College of Management have the option of applying to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Entrepreneurship. The New Venture Development Program at the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship offers selected students a one-year immersion curriculum during their senior year. In collaboration with their peers and with entrepreneurs serving as mentors, students build a new venture from the ground up and hone their entrepreneurial and business leadership skill set in the process.
