The materials science and engineering degree program immerses you in hands-on study geared to discovering materials for products and technology, and finding new ways to use and improve existing ones. Materials science engineers research, design and develop polymers, metals, ceramics, composites, and other natural and synthetic materials to advance fields such as energy, health care, aerospace and defense. Students earning a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering work directly with the materials they study through smelting, composite manufacturing and glassblowing labs. Geographers study Earth's features, but with a strong appreciation for the human-environment relations that shape and are shaped by the distributions of these features across the landscape. Physical geography takes a scientific approach to understanding Earth's physical environment. The Bachelor of Science in Geography with a Physical Geography emphasis provides rigorous training in Earth and environmental science, emphasizing quantitative and scientific approaches to studying the physical environment. Students are encouraged to pursue internships and have access to research opportunities at renowned facilities and organizations, including Biosphere 2, Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research and the Water Resources Research Center.

Explore the concepts of ecology and genetics in an evolutionary context in the first department of its kind in the world. The field of ecology and evolutionary biology deals with the integration of biological systems across all levels of organization, from molecular biology to global ecosystems. This Bachelor of Science is for the student planning to pursue graduate study or a career in ecology and evolutionary biology, or a related scientific field. The Bachelor of Arts prepares students for careers that require having scientific knowledge, such as scientific journalism, developing environmental and scientific policy or practicing law in related fields. The curriculum includes core courses in genetics, ecology and evolution, with additional study through involvement in independent research, usually by working in the labs of our faculty. Mexican American Studies examines the Mexican American experience as informed by social and health sciences, history, law and humanities. Students in this Bachelor of Arts major gain insight into how government and public policy, minority health disparities, urban planning, law, immigration, language and more affect the Mexican American population. Current U.S. demographic trends show that Mexican Americans live and work in the Southwest, the Midwest and the South, and many of these communities need people who are knowledgeable about the challenges and trajectories of Mexican Americans. The French and Francophone focus suits students with wide-ranging interests in French and Francophone studies to complete a French major without taking all courses in French. After completing the core requirements in French language, students take courses in the major that are taught in English. Students benefit from a diverse program, with coursework in language, literature and culture. There are also opportunities to study abroad in Paris, which is one of the oldest and most established study abroad programs at the University of Arizona.

Students seeking their Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a Hispanic Literature emphasis will take language courses in both Spanish and Portuguese while studying Hispanic literature. The Bachelor of Arts in German Studies is designed to familiarize students with the German language and the cultures and histories of German-speaking communities. Designated a German Center of Excellence by the American Association of Teachers of German, the German Studies department provides students with a diverse education.
