How do social movements start? How do leaders gain power? Can governments run efficiently? Gain insight into these topics and more with a degree that explores political ideas. Political science is the study of government, public policy and the political behavior of individuals and groups. When students embark on a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with an emphasis in Ideas and Methods, they focus on theoretical questions that lead to real-world change. Students explore the processes, principles and structures of government and political institutions in the U.S. and in countries around the globe. Coursework covers international relations, political theory, foreign affairs, methodology and institutions, and includes hands-on internship opportunities at nonprofit organizations and government agencies. Students graduate with important writing, critical thinking and analytical skills.

Be the change you want to see in the world. This course of study looks at the environment from the critical perspectives of policy and social science. Environmental Studies sheds light on the human dimensions of environmental issues. The interdisciplinary nature of this Bachelor of Arts makes the study of geography critical to understanding key factors affecting the environment in today's world. Distinguished faculty members teach courses about water, land use, food, energy, the built environment and climate related to both urban and rural areas. Students explore techniques for addressing pressing social science issues, but they study physical science techniques as well. The University of Arizona awards more undergraduate degrees in geography than almost any other school in the country, and the School of Geography and Development is ranked as one of the top geography departments.

Armed with an understanding of the soil-plant relationship, discover plant systems that maximize production, conserve resources and minimize environmental damage. The Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Plant Systems has four tracks; students in the Agronomy track expand their knowledge of crop production. Plants are the foundation of biodiversity, global climate and the sustainability of the planet. As such, increased crop yields, reduced use of land and improved efficiency are key to healthy ecosystems and sustained human life. This interdisciplinary degree draws on coursework from basic and applied plant and soil science and features small classes and hands-on training. Students focus on developing low water use and disease-resistant plants that maximize crop yield and plant health in fields where land size constrains production.

Examine the social dimensions of health and health care in directly applicable ways, making for an impactful career within a helping profession. The Care, Health and Society major equips students who plan to pursue careers in medical professions and offers a broader perspective of how health care integrates within the context of social interaction, social institutions and social structures. This interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science incorporates coursework from the social sciences, science and humanities, and offers a fully online option. The program complements training in public health and front-line health care careers, providing students with the toolkit necessary to address persistent population health issues, inform public health initiatives and combat barriers to health care delivery. Students obtain analytical, organizational and advocacy skills for the helping professions.

Students immerse themselves in environmental laws, regulations and policies. They discover how to be part of a successful response to pollution, natural resource management and climate change. Students gain a broad scientific understanding of society's influence on the planet, and learn how to interpret and clearly communicate the current environmental problems. Anthropology is the study of all aspects of human existence. Students in this Bachelor of Arts program learn to ask questions about essential components of the human experience, such as language, cultural development, environment and biology. Guided by respected anthropologists, students hone their ability to describe, interpret and predict human behavior, a skill applicable to industries as far-reaching as journalism and technology. This program delves into the languages, cultures, history and politics of Latin America. The Bachelor of Arts emphasizes community engagement, foreign language acquisition and international relations. This degree pairs well as a second major to almost any other degree program at the University of Arizona, from business and public health to journalism and food studies.
