Middle East and North African Studies employs an interdisciplinary approach to learning about all aspects of this region. The Bachelor of Arts focuses on instruction in the principal languages of the area (Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew) and includes coursework in religion, political science, history, literature, geography, sociology, archaeology, linguistics and architecture. Students seek degrees in this department out of a genuine interest in this part of the world, often on a professional path to government service, academics, a position in international business or as preparation for advanced study in this or other fields.

Learning Outcomes

• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to identify the major historical periods, figures, and movements that have shaped the Middle East and North Africa from 600 C.E. to the present.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to compare and contrast the various social, cultural, religious, geographic and linguistic milieus of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to critically evaluate popular, political and/or media discussions of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to analyze and synthesize information from primary and secondary sources in order to develop and write a research paper.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to achieve proficiency at the intermediate level in one of the languages of the Middle East and North Africa (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish). Communicative proficiency is defined in accordance with the Standards for foreign language learning as developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These are further analyzed below: i. To communicate in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) languages, both orally and in writing, by engaging in interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational communication activities (Communication). ii. To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the MENA cultures through language activities such as written essays and oral presentations on cultural topics (Culture). iii. To make meaningful cross-cultural comparisons between two or more of the MENA cultures (Comparisons).

The New Venture Development Program at the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship offers selected students a one-year immersion curriculum during their senior year. In collaboration with their peers and with entrepreneurs serving as mentors, students build a new venture from the ground up and hone their entrepreneurial and business leadership skill set in the process. Students earning a Bachelor of Music in Performance with an emphasis in the French Horn learn from and interact with the Fred Fox School of Music's esteemed faculty. Dedicated to honing student talent, the faculty members are equally at home in the classroom, studio and on the stage. Along with individualized instruction and mentoring, performance faculty members regularly appear in solo recitals and as guest artists with major opera companies, symphony orchestras, chamber groups and other ensembles. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with an emphasis in Photography, Video and Imaging encourages students to conduct a rigorous investigation into the nature and meaning of photographic representation and its role in contemporary culture. Students demonstrate commitment to expressive inquiry, develop maturity of vision and take responsibility for their professional development as artists. The program offers a progressive approach to the practice of photography, asking students to question and expand the boundaries of the medium. Students take courses in traditional black-and-white darkroom techniques, digital and other image-forming technologies, color processes, large-scale photography, video and performance.

Undergraduates in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) study all aspects of communication sciences and disorders across the life span. The coursework is designed to foster development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills and enhances students' ability to evaluate scientific information. Students also have opportunities to participate in experiential activities such as research labs and clinical observation in an on-site speech, language and hearing clinic. A Bachelor of Science in SLHS prepares students for advanced degrees, such as Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, Doctor of Audiology or Doctor of Philosophy.

Be the change you want to see in the world. This course of study looks at the environment from the critical perspectives of policy and social science. Environmental Studies sheds light on the human dimensions of environmental issues. The interdisciplinary nature of this Bachelor of Arts makes the study of geography critical to understanding key factors affecting the environment in today's world. Distinguished faculty members teach courses about water, land use, food, energy, the built environment and climate related to both urban and rural areas. Students explore techniques for addressing pressing social science issues, but they study physical science techniques as well. The University of Arizona awards more undergraduate degrees in geography than almost any other school in the country, and the School of Geography and Development is ranked as one of the top geography departments.

The course of study for the Bachelor of Fine Arts introduces students to community-based arts education, design pedagogy, civic engagement and social practice - and how those work together. Students interact with practitioners in the field through hands-on experiences, guest lectures, internships and real-life projects. Global Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to thinking critically about global issues. This Bachelor of Arts is structured around intellectual and experiential frameworks that empower students to analyze, adapt, communicate, problem-solve and empathize. The Global Political and Economy emphasis examines the mechanisms of order and disorder, and cooperation and conflict among humans. It also explores the major types of formal organizations, including nation-states, international or transnational organizations, and nongovernment organizations. Students gain knowledge of diverse global institutions and their political, economic, social and cultural impacts on the world. They also develop ""global competency"" by obtaining the necessary skills for engaging in problem-solving across boundaries.

The Bachelor of Arts with a Digital Journalism emphasis provides students with a solid foundation in journalism reporting and ethics while helping them develop the digital skills they need to excel in the world of online reporting. Journalism students learn to gather information, interview subjects, analyze the content, distill it and then communicate to an audience effectively, accurately, quickly and ethically. Student seeking a Digital Journalism emphasis also hone advanced skills ranging from media entrepreneurship and app development to visual storytelling and data mining that further prepare them for this rapidly evolving field. A second major or a minor in a specialized field, such as political science, religion or Middle Eastern studies, is required.
