Political science is the study of government, public policy and the political behavior of individuals and groups. In the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science program with a Law and Public Policy emphasis, students prepare for a career as a change-maker in law, as a government official as they study not only the foundations of political theory, institutions, international relations, foreign affairs and more, but also the how-to of making policy and progress happen. Students develop powerful analytical, argumentation and communication skills, and have access to internships at nonprofit organizations and government agencies, such as the Arizona Legislature and the Arizona Superior Court, and local and state politicians' campaigns.

The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Law is an interdisciplinary major that offers a comprehensive perspective of current social, economic and political issues. The content draws on courses from philosophy, politics and economics, but the heart of the program is a set of specialized core courses designed exclusively for majors. These are taught in small classroom settings by distinguished faculty with appointments in philosophy, political science, economics and law. Students learn to analyze the fundamental values that shape the economic, political and legal domains; develop an understanding of the moral and historical foundations of economic institutions and political-legal structures; and gain logical thinking and conceptual analysis skills.

Are you a practicing paramedic seeking your four-year degree? Consider the Emergency Medical Services program to bolster your training. The Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at the University of Arizona's College of Medicine is designed for certified paramedics who are practicing at the state or national level. Students majoring in EMS will gain advanced training in leadership and critical care for both adult and pediatric patients from courses taught by experienced emergency medicine and EMS physicians. They'll expand their knowledge in EMS systems, disaster response, special operations, EMS medical and legal concerns, and EMS care in rural, wilderness and other limited-resource settings. This fully online program is designed to accommodate working paramedics and learners who are outside of Arizona or deployed. This program requires paramedic certification; an associate degree from community college is not required.

If proficiency in both Spanish and Portuguese is important to you, consider the Spanish and Portuguese emphasis under the Spanish major. Students seeking their Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a Spanish and Portuguese emphasis take language, literature, linguistics and culture courses in both languages. The major consists of 18 credits in each language, and placement exams help determine a student's starting level. The University of Arizona is home to one of the largest Portuguese language programs in the nation, and various clubs offer students the opportunity to practice conversing in either Spanish or Portuguese outside of the classroom.
