A Bachelor of Arts in Writing trains you to write with insight, clarity, and creativity. It prepares you for a variety of career paths or further degree programs.

Students will develop appreciation for the art of writing and hone their own skills as writers. They  will be able to read closely, produce creative and critical written pieces driven by their own insights in conversation with the ideas of others, do research independently, reflect critically on their own writing, and talk intelligently about their insights in discussions or formal presentations.

Our students develop sophisticated understandings of writing through reading and producing essays, short stories, poems, and public humanities writings. Students learn to read with a writers’ eye by analyzing the craft of published authors.  They sharpen their critical skills and their writing technique by participating in peer workshops.  Guided by award-winning faculty who are poets, novelists, literary scholars, and cultural critics, Writing majors discover their own style and talent as thinkers and writers.

Writing majors learn to read with discernment and write with clarity and force. Such abilities enrich students’ personal lives while providing them with practical skills that serve them well in their professional lives. Writing majors discover their own voices, learn to collaborate and revise, develop skills of critical analysis and creative expression, and gain confidence in themselves as independent thinkers.

The Accounting major is a gateway to lucrative opportunities in a wide variety of exciting professional careers. Students will master the knowledge and skills needed to pass the CPA, CMA, or CIA exams. Whether your goal is to be an officer in a CPA firm, lead an accounting department in industry, establish a private practice, or any of a host of other possibilities, our accounting program will help you get there.

Nurses are always in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses (RNs) is projected to grow 7 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Furthermore, the need for trained nurses will never disappear.

Trained nurses with a BSN degree from Simmons University have the ability to work anywhere around the country—or even internationally. No matter where you end up, no two days will be the same in your nursing career. To succeed in economics, you'll need a strong understanding of issues like health care reform and inequality, institutions such as the Federal Reserve and the International Monetary Fund, and debates about government debt, globalization and sustainability.

Our program will help you develop the analytical, research, writing, quantitative and communication skills you'll need to produce significant research papers and confidently present your findings.

Outside the classroom, faculty interact with students in the Economics Liaison, discussing economic news and debates, organizing special lectures, and attending off-campus events. The Economics Liaison also collaborates with the Department in organizing a series of activities aimed at helping students secure internships and transition to careers and graduate school. In addition, students prepare for career success through the Department's Econnect program, featuring events like the annual Economics Student-Alumnae Networking Dinner and alumnae-led workshops on networking, negotiation, interviewing, résumé development and LinkedIn.

Our students combine their passions, incorporating their expertise into fields like finance, community development and government. Study in economics is also excellent preparation for law school and graduate study in economics, public policy, international relations, management, finance, and many other fields.

Our students study the universal laws of the natural world to understand the devices that transform our lives, from pacemakers and artificial limbs to integrated circuits and rocket engines.

Our graduates go on to a variety of innovative careers in industry and education. They're also well-prepared for medical school, law, dental or graduate programs in physics, chemistry, biochemistry and engineering. Premed students and other science majors often major or minor in physics as well to enhance and differentiate their backgrounds and widen their research experiences.

Environmental science teaches students to address growing concerns about environmental problems in the contemporary world. You'll explore this interdisciplinary field, working to understand the interactions among physical, chemical, biological, and human factors.

Environmental science is a joint major offered by the Departments of Biology and Chemistry. This major recognizes the importance of environmental problems and human-caused climate change in the contemporary world, and the resulting expansion of career opportunities as well as graduate programs in this area. Environmental science is a broad interdisciplinary field working to understand the interactions among physical, chemical, biological, and human factors. A comprehensive understanding of how the environment functions and the influence of human actions, has the potential for improved conservation, sustainable development, environmental justice, and restoration of natural resources. Concerns about environmental degradations and climate change are ever more pressing in the 21st century and have led to a growing demand for specialists in this field as well as programs to train these specialists.

Our students perfectly blend information technology with computer science, management and communications, able to solve complex computing problems and communicate the results.

Technology is constantly developing and evolving, presenting new challenges and opportunities
Through hands-on class projects you'll learn vital skills — like modern programming language, database management and web applications — and hone your quantitative skills.

As an information technologist, you'll determine user needs and develop, manage, and support technology-based solutions. Our students are well prepared for careers as web developers, web administrators, IT consultants, network supporters, system integrators, system analysts and application developers.

The major in art includes courses in art history and studio art practice. Students choose either area to emphasize, depending upon interest and career plans. Either emphasis can serve as a foundation for further study at the graduate level. The study of art leads to careers in a wide variety of fields, such as teaching, publishing, arts administration, art conservation, museum or gallery work, commercial art and design, architecture, city planning, painting, photography, or printmaking, etc. In all of these areas, the major in art would profitably be combined with a major in another area, such as English, history, chemistry, philosophy, management, communications, or mathematics.

Students are encouraged to augment the required courses with in-depth study in the liberal arts and additional courses in the major. Students work with their advisor to develop a coherent course program that will meet their educational goals. Students considering graduate study should plan to take as many upper level courses in their major as they can accommodate in their schedules, especially during junior and senior years.

The chemistry-management joint major is designed for students who would like to apply their scientific interests to a business career. The major is appropriate for a variety of careers at the interface of the two disciplines, such as sales and marketing specialists for chemical and pharmaceutical companies, business officers in science-based industries or institutions, and scientific information liaisons (e.g., public relations, political advising, and lobbying).
