It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Studies
The Theatre Studies BA is similar to most of UConn's liberal arts degrees in students take approximately 40% of their college credits within their major field. On the introductory, 1000 course level, BA students must take the same core courses required of all Dramatic Arts majors. In addition, BA students elect a further 18 credits of courses in dramatic arts at the 3000-4000 level. The remaining 60% of the BA curriculum consists mainly of liberal arts courses, including the University's broad-ranging General Education Requirements and the election of 12 credits at the 3000-4000 level in a related group of courses outside the department.
Thanks to its special combination of academic studies in theatre and production experience through the Connecticut Repertory Theatre, the BA in Theatre Studies provides an excellent foundation for graduate work in theatre or other academic fields, as well as a foundation for professional careers in directing, playwriting, dramatic criticism, stage management, theatre management, and a host of other related fields within the theatre, film, and television industries.
The following is a list of the dramatic arts courses you will take in order to complete your BA in Theatre Studies. “Related” courses are non-Dramatic Arts courses.

Bachelor of Arts in Art History
Art History at UCONN focuses on art’s transformative capacity to change the way we see and understand the world. Art History emphasizes not only the aesthetic and historical meanings of art, visual culture, and objects, but also their ability to address issues of social justice and social significance in our increasingly visual world. Art History endows core skills—critical observing, thinking, and writing—for seeing a better world. There is no field, no career, no area of work that is not enhanced by a degree in Art History. Skills honed by study in Art History are skills needed in all walks of life. Graduates succeed in arts professions such as curatorships, art conservation, gallery and museum directorships and management, arts administration, art critics, and non-profit work. Yet most take the skills gained through their study of Art History to pursue careers in areas such as law, healthcare, business, international relations, publishing, politics, and marketing.

Marine Sciences
Bachelor of Arts in Maritime Studies (STEM)
Water covers more than two-thirds of the Earth’s surface and the majority of the human population lives within 50 miles of navigable waterways. The world’s oceans and great riparian systems have provided the dominant medium for human economic and cultural exchange and the context for many of humanity’s most dramatic stories, powerful technologies, and aesthetic and literary achievements.
Maritime Studies is an interdisciplinary major that embraces the liberal arts as the foundation for exploring humankind’s critical and continually evolving connections with the world’s waterways and watersheds.
The Maritime Studies Program combines rigorous liberal arts training in recognized humanities and social science disciplines such as history, English, economics, political science, anthropology and geography with specialized courses, interdisciplinary seminars, and research and internship opportunities that focus on issues, traditions, and problems that influence life in maritime regions. A complement to the Marine Sciences Major Maritime Studies highlights the social and cultural side of the human/water relationship, but recognizes and explores the links between human activities and the composition and the condition of the coastal and marine environments.
Maritime Studies is a flexible but focused major that students may shape to meet a wide range of occupational and educational goals. Depending upon the track of studies selected, Maritime Studies students may prepare for a range of careers including those in the maritime service and heritage tourism sectors as well as for graduate study in maritime and public history, English, journalism, marine policy and cultural resource management, planning and regulation, education, law, or business. The Maritime Studies Program takes advantage of the UConn-Avery Point campus’ unique Long Island Sound location and its many coastal and maritime educational resources and research programs including the UConn Sea Grant Institute, the National Undersea Research Center, the Long Island Sound Resource Center, and Marine Sciences Department. Significant internship and research opportunities for students are also available through agreements with regional institutions that include Mystic Seaport, one of the world’s premier maritime museums and research centers.
