Students within the Quaternity program at Montana State explore their education through the lens of a traditional liberal arts education, with a flexible student-centered course plan that views the world through four concepts of knowledge: thinking, feeling, intuition and sensation. As part of the Liberal Studies department, Quaternity students take a series of integrative seminars designed to provide a sense of academic community and improve their critical thinking and communication skills, all while obtaining a better understanding of the factual knowledge and theoretical foundations of the subjects they’re studying.

Agroecologists explore how crops and pest organisms interact with their environment, and the application of technology to efficiently and sustainability produce crops. In the Agroecology program at Montana State, students focus on community ecology, environmental science and cropland ecosystems and how they affect agricultural production decisions. After mastering fundamental principles of ecology, soil science, agronomy and pest management, Agroecology students are prepared to enter careers in the food or bioenergy sectors.

In the Bioengineering program at Montana State, graduate students further their understanding of topics related to biofilms, biochemical transformation and bioengineering in order to build professional skills and knowledge in the medical and energy system sectors. By earning a Masters of Engineering degree, candidates further their understanding of new subjects in the biological engineering field alongside award-winning faculty who are recognized leaders in their areas of expertise.

Students in the Physics program at Montana State work closely with faculty on cutting-edge research projects that range from subjects as varied as astrophysics, biophysics, optics, solar physics and space science. The Interdisciplinary option in the Physics program allows for students to gain a solid foundation in mathematics and the physical sciences while also specializing in another subject such as chemistry, biology, computer science, engineering, material science, optics and beyond. Using this broad base, students enter into careers as diverse as education, business administration, journalism, education or technical writing.

In the graduate program for Immunology and Infectious Disease at Montana State, candidates pursue research projects within state-of-the-art laboratories on subjects such as vaccines and disease evolution, as well as genetics, disease transmission and immune responses. Candidates conduct these projects in labs such as the Core Flow Cytometry Facility and the state-of-the-art Cooley Laboratory. Students within the Geography program at Montana State are introduced to a series of core geography courses that explore world regional, physical and human geography concepts. Candidates in the Community Health graduate program at Montana State integrate public health theory and critical thinking in an interdisciplinary program that allows students to design their course of study with a faculty mentor in order to ensure that their curriculum is aligned with professional interests and goals. In addition to nurturing close professional relationships with faculty mentors, Community Health candidates also gain hands-on research experience with research projects and partnerships with rural or Native American communities.

In the graduate program for Plant Pathology at Montana State, candidates investigate major problems in plant pathology within MSU’s state of the art agricultural facilities. Sample research projects include, but are not limited to, soil-borne diseases in cereals, the genetic root of disease resistance in field crops, cereal leaf spots, viral diseases inherent in cereals and potatoes, bacterial diseases in plants, and the biochemistry and molecular genetics of general plant diseases. Not only does this research apply to making a healthier and more robust food supply, but the research also seeks to develop new technology to manage crop pests.

Students within the Global & Multicultural Studies program at Montana State combine the traditional foundation of a broad-based liberal arts education with in-depth study of international and American cultural, ethnic and gender issues that span a wide range of disciplines.
