In the Chemical Engineering graduate program at Montana State, graduate students advance knowledge at the frontiers of their field to generate solutions in medicine, energy systems and more. Environmental Design students at Montana State learn how to design the spaces and structures where people live, work and play. Coursework focuses on scientific knowledge, technical expertise and high-level architectural design thinking both inside the studio and in the community at large. The Environmental Design program is specifically designed to prepare all graduates for acceptance into a Master of Architecture program, which licenses that candidate to work as a professional in the field.

Students in the Environmental Sciences program at Montana State are exposed to a broader, more general view of the environmental sciences, whether in preparation to transfer into a more specialized major option or simply to get a broader understanding of land and natural resource systems. Students receive training in applied ecology, soil and water science and land resources analysis, as well as experience in developing and implementing effective land management strategies.

In the graduate Art History program at Montana State, candidates have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with faculty that possess extensive experience in field, museum and archival research. With a strong record of scholarly publications and backgrounds in art historical theory and methodology, candidates are able to collaborate on scholarship that spans from antiquity to the core of Western art history, as well as foci in Ancient to Contemporary China, the Americas, decorative arts and museum studies.

In the Medical Laboratory Science option at Montana State, students are prepared for a career in clinical laboratory science by taking coursework in a range of medically-oriented fields including immunology, medical bacteriology, virology, parasitology, hematology, mycology and chemistry. Depending on the student’s needs, the Medical Laboratory Science program offers two plans for students to complete the program. Once training is complete, Medical Laboratory Science students will be qualified to take a national registry exam and become certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

In the Sustainable Food Systems program at Montana State, students focus on the interconnected relationships between production, food policy, food security and health in order to make informed decisions and solutions to complex problems in the food industry. Sustainable Food Systems students develop important skills through hands-on experience in service-based learning internships, organic farming, culinary fundamentals and management, training on research methods and carrying out research projects in surrounding communities.

Situated jointly within the College of Agriculture and the College of Letters and Science, the economics program at Montana State has an excellent reputation with regional, national and international firms as well as exceptional graduate schools. In the Food Enterprise option students practice strategies on entrepreneurship and innovation in food growth and development. This means discovering how to make new and exciting products with specialty crops native to Montana, learning about sustainability and rural hospitality through hands-on opportunities, either with internships or working at the Towne’s Harvest Garden located on campus. Graduates of the Food Enterprise program enter careers in food processing, food distribution or opening their own business in the food sector.

Students within the Microbial Systems program at Montana State start their studies with a strong foundation in coursework on chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology and genetics during the first two years of the program. From there, students will apply both molecular and cellular biological concepts and associated techniques to address problems facing microbial production systems.
