In the Sustainable Food Systems program at Montana State, students focus on the interconnected relationships between production, food policy, food security and health in order to make informed decisions and solutions to complex problems in the food industry. Sustainable Food Systems students develop important skills through hands-on experience in service-based learning internships, organic farming, culinary fundamentals and management, training on research methods and carrying out research projects in surrounding communities.

In the Geographic Information Science/Planning program at Montana State, students use a mix of technical skills and academic training to prepare to enter the fields of planning and resource management. Students will be prepared as map makers, spatial analysts and planners as they work in an active hands-on environment.

The Human Development & Family Science option at Montana State is an interdisciplinary program that prepares students for careers working with individuals and families, spanning from counseling to social services. Human Development & Family Science students who have completed the degree are able to apply for provisional certification as a Certified Family Life Educator, or can go onto graduate study in counseling or social work.

Candidates within the Earth Sciences graduate program at Montana State are encouraged to dive into independent thesis research across a variety of specializations within the fields of geography and geology. Faculty and advisor expertise spans many subfields of the discipline, including settlement geography, bioclimatology, GIS, planning, snow science, volcanology, paleobiology, dinosaur taphonomy, stratigraphy and geomorphology. Recent M.S. students have produced groundbreaking research and have expanded our knowledge of issues from GIS-based assessment of landslide hazards to exotic species assessment in Grand Teton National Park.

Students in the Equine Science track of Animal Science at Montana State are immersed in a program that combines the scientific and technical knowledge required in the industry with practical aspects of management, horsemanship and training. Students gain experience with business and management tools for the equine industry, colt breaking and horse behavior, land management for small acreage grazing and equine growth and development. In addition to hands-on learning experiences and internships, students can also take advantage of the program’s amazing facilities and affiliated Farrier School.

In the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department at Montana State, graduate students pioneer knowledge in their field to generate solutions in advanced materials, renewable energy and more. In the Criminology program at Montana State, students combine a strong foundation in sociology with a specific focus on law, the legal system, the social structure of criminal behavior and society’s efforts to understand and control crime. Criminology students are able to delve into coursework on subjects such as social difference and stratification, criminal law and procedure, the sociology of deviance, corporate crime, inequality and more.

Microbiology is a diverse discipline that has become an umbrella term for a variety of studies, including bacteriology, mycology, protozoology, phycology, parasitology and virology. In the Environmental Microbiology program at Montana State, students are able to delve into the study of molecular biology, microbial physiology, microbial genetics and environmental microbiology to prepare for careers in the field.

The Latin American and Latino Studies program at Montana State provides students interested in Latin American and Latino history, culture, and language with valuable interdisciplinary skills. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, Latin American and Latino Studies students are given the option to not only study courses focusing on Latin American and Latino socio-cultural subjects but other relevant content from other departments such as sociology, political science or gender studies, as well. Although the equivalent of four semesters of Spanish language is required, students with prior experience in Spanish language or heritage students may have some of those language requirements waived.

Industrial & Management Systems Engineers optimize the ways in which organizations deliver goods and services, often bridging gaps between management and operations teams in business organizations. In the Industrial & Management Systems Engineering program at Montana State, students learn how to apply mathematical models and engineering problem-solving skills to improve efficiency and create safer and more productive workplaces.
