Instead of learning only good spelling and grammar, you’ll expand your cultural awareness through the study of civilization, culture and literature and become a global citizen. Since languages are best learned through immersion, all classes are taught entirely in French. You are encouraged to seize the many opportunities to interact in French in the community and abroad.

At Hanover, English majors read, write and study literature in order to investigate the basic human impulse to make sense of life through art.

You’ll study traditional literary works as well as underrepresented voices that may be new to you. Our award-winning faculty and visiting scholars will challenge you with new ideas. Develop your own creative writing and contribute to the student-run literary magazine, newspaper or coffee house readings. Travel abroad to discover your literary roots. As you advance in your studies, take one of our unique, in-depth seminars focused on a literary master. The major culminates with an independent research or creative project you design yourself.

As a Hanover art major, you’ll travel to cities near and far to study historical masterpieces. But your experience will be decidedly 21st century. By exploring the breadth of media at your fingertips in the modern world – from drawing to painting to sculpture to photography – you’ll discover for yourself which medium best expresses your vision in a particular work of art. This interdisciplinary experience, rather than an intense focus on a single form, will help you become a critical thinker and problem-solver. Mathematics students at Hanover learn to reason through problems to find a solution, express ideas clearly and recognize relations among seemingly dissimilar situations. As a mathematics major, you will become a creative thinker who can analyze a wide range of situations. You will master the skill of simplifying the complex. With small class sizes and a dedicated faculty, Hanover also lets you follow your particular interests through internships and independent study programs.

With a broad interdisciplinary base, the gender studies major at Hanover allows you to look at the subject of gender through a variety of lenses. The departments of theology, sociology, philosophy, psychology, political science, art history and English all have something to teach you about gender.

You’ll look at gender in various cultures and how it shapes people’s experiences and world views. You’ll break down your own assumptions through dynamic class discussions and experiences. For many students, the major is not so much a body of knowledge as it is a deeply personal path of inquiry. The major is often combined with second major.

What is the self? Does God exist? Why are some actions considered right and others wrong? What is the relationship between the world and us? As a Hanover philosophy student, you’ll grapple with life’s biggest questions in a remarkably broad range of classes.

You’ll also explore individual interests with accomplished, diverse faculty members. From contemporary political thought to Taoism and Cooking, these courses will challenge you to experiment with new ideas and further your own personal development.

At Hanover, students use chemistry to better understand the issues faced by modern society. Maybe your interest is life-saving antibiotics or new kinds of synthetic fibers. Maybe you want to learn how to measure pesticides in drinking water or the antioxidants in food. It’s all possible to explore in the superbly equipped labs at your disposal.

You’ll begin with an introduction to the breadth of chemistry, followed by a deeper study of advanced subjects. Your program will culminate with a collaborative research project in which you’ll explore an area of interest to you, with the help from a member of Hanover’s highly specialized faculty. Along the way, you will become a person who speaks the language of chemistry, thinks critically and solves problems.
