In medicine, it’s errors in biochemistry that cause most diseases. That’s why so many students interested in medicine are attracted to the biochemistry major at Hanover.

By focusing on the molecular aspects of biology, especially DNA, you can better understand the chemical processes and reactions that occur in humans and other living creatures. You may also develop a better understanding of food production, how to grow better crops and how to develop biofuels for energy.

With small class sizes, you’ll work closely with experienced faculty and have an uncommon level of access to the college’s well-supplied lab.

By exploring the breadth of media at your fingertips in the modern world – from drawing to painting to sculpture to photography – you’ll discover for yourself which medium best expresses your vision in a particular work of art. This interdisciplinary experience, rather than an intense focus on a single form, will help you become a critical thinker and problem-solver. Environmental stewardship is a core value here, and you can make a difference while you’re still in school with local service projects and green initiatives.

As you study human behavior and the mind with Hanover’s accomplished, widely published faculty, you’ll learn that all of life is a process of inquiry. Unlike any other school, you’ll design and conduct your own research projects at least four times in the course of your studies.

In fact, all seniors present their projects at an undergraduate research conference. For hands-on experience, maybe you’ll conduct low-level therapy in controlled situations on campus. Or maybe you’ll intern with a local psychiatric hospital or community agency. As a psychology student at Hanover, you will have a better understanding of how and why people act, think and feel the way they do.

Computing drives innovation in the sciences (such as the human genome project, AIDS vaccine research, environmental monitoring and protection, just to mention a few), and also in engineering, business, entertainment and education.

As a Hanover sociology student, you’ll learn to step outside your own class, ethnicity and gender to see the world from other points on the social spectrum. You’ll quickly apply your class work in practical settings.

Maybe your class will visit the penitentiary or homeless shelter. Maybe you will travel to Arizona to study Native American sociology or to a major European city to study urban society. You may delve into the causes of the Holocaust, the sources of Lincoln’s greatness, the role of technology in war, our roles as members of a family, the triumph of Enlightenment rationalism, the meaning of our Constitution and much more. In other words, you learn to search for an interpretation of the past.
