The Department of Psychology and Counseling offers a Master of Science Degree with a Major in Psychology. Within the program, students will select from two different emphasis areas, General or Clinical.

The Clinical emphasis is designed for students who wish to pursue master’s level licensure in psychology or counseling and provide direct clinical service to individuals with psychological disorders. Students who earn the degree, complete post-degree supervision, and pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology are eligible for designation as Licensed Clinical Psychotherapists in Kansas. The program includes a 750 clock hour practicum and internship sequence. The program meets educational requirements for Licensed Professional Counselor in most states, including Missouri, but requirements vary by state. Additional post-degree supervision and national examination are required for licensure as a professional counselor and also varies by state.

The Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation (HHPR) is located in the new Student Recreation Center. The HHPR faculty possess a wide array of specializations. The department offers undergraduate degree programs in Exercise Science, Recreation Services, Sport and Hospitality Management, and Physical Education, five minors and certificates in Dance, Coaching, and Hospitality Management, as well as a graduate program in HHPR. Within each of the degree programs, there are emphases/concentration areas from which students select the professional paths that best fit their needs.

Recreation and Sport Management - Emphasis
The Recreation and Sport Management emphasis provides students with the skills needed to serve leadership, supervisory, and management roles in city, park and recreation capacities and other leisure service agencies and sport industries. Upon completion of the program, students are encouraged to take one or more of the following exams: the Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) offered by the National Recreation and Park Association, Certified Sports Event Executive (CSEE), Certified Sports Administrator (CSA) through National Council of Youth Sports and/or Certified Sports Field Manager (CSFM) through Sports Turf Managers Association.

Collision Repair and Insurance Management - Emphasis
This program is the perfect choice for students whose career plans are to work in insurance or collision repair positions. An emphasis area within our 4-year Automotive Technology program, the Collision Repair and Insurance Management program focuses on this 10 billion/year sector of the automotive industry.

The Department of Management and Marketing is one of the most dynamic and innovative within the Kelce College of Business. Students master foundational business and marketing theory while implementing contemporary concepts.

Management
Successful business managers are much more than bosses, they are team builders. They use a broad range of knowledge and skills to create exciting and effective workplaces.

A Management degree provides students a broad background in organizational behavior, human resources, and field operations, a background suitable for careers in managerial positions in business, government, or any organization. The broad nature of this degree makes it an ideal one to supplement with second major or minor from nearly any discipline.

Our geography students acquire superior skills in critical thinking and analysis, dynamic communication, computer usage, and analysis in a number of software areas. We strive to keep students on the cutting edge of technology. These technological skills, critical thinking skills, and the overall applied nature of a geography education provide students with abilities that are in demand at public and private agencies. Students also gain the expert knowledge and training they need to pursue admission to graduate programs, if that is part of their career plan.

Geography programs are part of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences department. The programs provide high-quality instruction to students in ways that emphasize active learning, problem solving, and critical thinking through transformative experiences.

International Studies - Emphasis
The Bachelor of Arts Degree with an Emphasis in International Studies, is a multi-disciplinary program, incorporating a variety of disciplines across colleges and departments within the Pittsburg State University community. Its core is Political Science, History, Geography, and Sociology with substantial contributions made by Economics, Management and Marketing, and Communication. In addition, a variety of other disciplines, such as Family and Consumer Sciences, English, and the Fine Arts provide important contributions. The major is designed to give students a core body of knowledge and basic skills necessary to live and work successfully in an increasingly interconnected world. The development of students' foreign language skills is a key component of the program. Students are encouraged to enroll in internships and practica.

The Department of Family & Consumer Sciences offers baccalaureate degrees and a cooperative master’s degree program. B.S. programs are offered in Nutrition and Wellness, Community and Family Services, and two tracks in Child Development. A B.S.E. program is offered in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. The department has an Early Childhood Unified: Birth - Kindergarten program. The department offers minors in Child Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Ecology, Nutrition and Wellness, and Youth and Adolescent Development. The department also contributes to minors in Women’s Studies and Public Health. 

Nutrition and Wellness - Emphasis
The Nutrition and Wellness concentration appeals to students who want to work in settings where they would apply knowledge about nutrition in the community setting. (This is not a dietetics program.) This concentration builds upon the Family and Consumer Sciences focus, which is the application of the sciences to the betterment of individuals, families, and communities.

We have undergraduate programs covering the range of modern biology including: pre-health (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-vet, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant), medical technology, cell and molecular biology, wildlife biology, fisheries and aquatic sciences, botany, ecology, and secondary education.

There are almost 400 students in the undergraduate program and about 20 in the graduate division. The Department of Biology has 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of interests. The faculty are dedicated and committed to Pittsburg State University and the department, but most importantly, to students. Most faculty are actively engaged in research activities, national professional organizations, and professional service.

Botany - Emphasis
How do plants grow and develop? What role do plants play in biodiversity? How do plants impact our physical environment? Students in the Botany emphasis will answer these questions and many more. Aimed at expanding current knowledge of plants and their importance in our world, the botany track helps students and graduates address major issues in the fields of agriculture, ecology, and horticulture.

The Botany emphasis is grounded in the basic sciences (general biology, chemistry, math, and physics) needed to understand the latest research in plant biology.

Therapeutic Recreation - Emphasis
The Therapeutic Recreation emphasis prepares students for supervisory and leadership positions in various hospital, private and community-based organizations delivering care as recreation therapists to individuals with various disabilities and ability levels.  Recreational therapists work with a variety of individuals requiring health services such as: physical medicine and rehabilitation, pediatrics, geriatrics, mental and behavioral health, addictions, veterans and developmental disabilities.  Students completing the Therapeutic Recreation emphasis allows them to sit for the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) Exam.

The Department of Music at Pittsburg State University is an accredited member of NASM, the National Association of Schools of Music.

Our department averages 100 music majors and 40 minors, and 200 non-music majors per semester, and is staffed by 16 full-time and 6 part-time faculty members. Music, Instrumental Performance - Emphasis
The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Music degree, with a variety of emphases in the areas of performance. Students will select an instrumental (string, wind, brass, percussion, or keyboard) emphasis. This degree is designed to prepare individuals for professional advancement or for entry into further study at the graduate level.
