The College of Arts and Sciences along with College of Technology offer a Master of Materials Science degree program. The Master of Materials Science prepares students for careers in industry and also for postgraduate degrees in materials science, engineering and related fields. This program is collaboratively designed to be an interdisciplinary degree between the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Technology. Such an interdisciplinary STEM program will provide hands-on, academic activities and practical experiences for students, readying them to join the workforce.

The Department of Communication offers a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Education, and Master of Arts degrees within a collaborative and collegial environment. Human Communication - Emphasis
Students in the human communication emphasis often work in management, leadership roles, politics, or continue on for advanced studies in the field. This emphasis examines the comprehensive role of human communication in everyday life. Students will learn to understand and analyze communication in a variety of contexts, including interpersonal relationships, workplace teams, and community and cultural groups.

There are few things in life as personally fulfilling as writing a story or poem others want to read. The best authors understand how to use the tools of their craft to convey emotion and move people to action. If you want to take your writing career to the next level, or simply desire a better understanding of poetry and prose construction, a Master of Arts Degree in English with an Emphasis in Creative Writing is for you.  

The M.A. in English with an Emphasis in Creative Writing grounds students in successful strategies to create their own fiction and poetry. Students also analyze fiction and poetry of other writers to determine how they create successful work.

The Department of Family & Consumer Sciences offers baccalaureate degrees and a cooperative master’s degree program. B.S. programs are offered in Nutrition and Wellness, Community and Family Services, and two tracks in Child Development. A B.S.E. program is offered in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. The department has an Early Childhood Unified: Birth - Kindergarten program. The department offers minors in Child Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Ecology, Nutrition and Wellness, and Youth and Adolescent Development. The department also contributes to minors in Women’s Studies and Public Health. 

Nutrition and Wellness - Emphasis
The Nutrition and Wellness concentration appeals to students who want to work in settings where they would apply knowledge about nutrition in the community setting. (This is not a dietetics program.) This concentration builds upon the Family and Consumer Sciences focus, which is the application of the sciences to the betterment of individuals, families, and communities.

Diesel and Heavy Equipment - Emphasis
This program provides students the opportunity to dive into three areas of diesel technology including: agricultural equipment, construction equipment and on highway truck systems. An emphasis area within our 4-year Automotive Technology program, the Managerial Management program, prepares students for a successful career in the automotive and diesel & heavy equipment manufacturing industry.

Pittsburg State University's Department of Chemistry prepares students for careers in science, chemical engineering, pharmacy, chemistry teaching, pre-engineering, and other university programs that require rigorous training in chemistry. It offers eight Bachelor of Science Degrees, two Master of Science Degrees, and one minor.

Environmental Chemistry - Emphasis
Environmental chemistry is the study of the chemical processes that occur in nature due to activities by humans, from soil to water to the atmosphere. Through field and laboratory work, environmental chemists attempt to understand how chemicals move through the environment and impact it, as well as human health. They take measurements, interpret data, and do computer modeling.

To prepare students for careers in environmental chemistry, the Department of Chemistry at Pittsburg State University offers a four-year Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Chemistry and Emphasis in Environmental Chemistry.

The Department of Engineering Technology is housed in the Kansas Technology Center on the Pittsburg State University  campus. Engineering Technology Programs are comprised of elements of the technological spectrum requiring scientific and engineering knowledge plus the operational methods and skills devoted to achieving practical purpose in support of product producing industries.

The Department of Physics at Pittsburg State University was founded in 1962 and has been dedicated to the outstanding teaching of undergraduate and graduate physics students ever since. The Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics with a Professional Emphasis features core courses and advanced training in theoretical physics along with electives. This combination prepares students for advanced training in graduate school, where they will seek a specialty.

The School of Construction offers a comprehensive sequence of courses in Environmental and Safety Management. This broad-based program exposes students to several aspects of environmental and workplace safety.

Environmental and Safety Management program is on the list of national board-approved programs. A student earning an environmental and safety management degree from a board-approved institution is automatically qualified for the Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM) credential offered by the ISHM.
