Student Learning Outcomes

Journalism has traditionally been a professional program that trains students in the professional standards required of a journalist at an entry-level position in the news media industries. Our program thus prepares students who, upon graduation, will be able to demonstrate:

• Strong news judgment and ethical news gathering and reporting.
• Knowledge of news media industries.
• An understanding of news media history and journalistic practices.
• The ability to report and write according to the standards of the news profession.
• The ability to record and edit audio-video content for online publication.
• The ability to report on digital media platforms.
• An understanding of media theory.
• Innovative thinking in the application of critical and analytical skills in news production.

Chemistry is the study of matter – what it’s made of and how it behaves, down to the molecular level. Chemists use math, theory, and experimentation to create chemical compounds and invent applications for their use in our lives. Chemistry Majors develop the laboratory, critical thinking, and research skills to succeed in graduate school, medical school, or a career in chemistry.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE
With a focus on experiential learning at RWU, Chemistry majors:

• Work on original research or in collaboration with faculty who are experts in their fields. Our undergraduate Chemistry majors conduct graduate-level laboratory research and receive credit for their research experience.
• Use sophisticated lab instrumentation and run experiments on their own, including working with instruments such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), Gas ChromatographyMass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
• Present research at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, National Aeronautics and Space Administration R.I. Space Grant, National Science Foundation C-AIM, and many local symposiums. These conferences help students understand how their work contributes to society and provide opportunity for networking, often leading to a job offer or invitation to apply to a graduate program.

As a Management major, you’ll learn how to lead organizations through complex decisions such as budgeting, negotiating, planning and directing. Because these decisions have broad impacts throughout an organization, RWU’s curriculum encourages you to think about dynamics like diversity, ethics and politics in the workplace. Combined with hands-on internship experience, you’ll gain the management skills for a successful career in human resources, purchasing, administrative services, health services, or your own entrepreneurial venture.

At RWU, you’ll learn both what motivates consumers and how to influence them. Our degree in Marketing will lead you to careers in advertising, brand management, market research, digital marketing, and more.Our curriculum emphasizes creative thinking, collaboration, and hands on experiences while exploring topics like brand strategy, communication, consumer behavior, and strategy development. With tracks in communication or analysis, and internships built into the curriculum, RWU will prepare you for the dynamic field of marketing in our global economy. You'll be ready to hit the ground running in your first job — whether at a large corporation, a startup enterprise or a local non-profit.

Students in the Psychology program will learn the methods and skills that enable them to evaluate published research and think critically about their own ideas and those of others. They are prepared to apply these methods to the problems of community and of the larger society. They are capable of tolerance for the views of others and able to appreciate the value of diversity.

With skilled mental health professionals in increasing demand as practitioners, the Psychology program at RWU prepares students to pursue graduate study in Psychology and other fields, or to enter any number of careers where these skillsets are applicable, including human resources, management, marketing, education and the mental health professions.

Our student learning outcomes center on encouraging the development in our students of a deep and broad knowledge base in the discipline of Psychology. It’s about precision, problem solving and creating technology services and solutions that will work in an increasingly complex future. With coursework that combines solid theory, real-world practice and specialization options, RWU students are ready for high-demand career fields from app developers to large scale software system designers.

The Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science prepares students for professional employment in the fields of computer science and computer programming fields. Students receive a thorough grounding in modern practices and methodologies needed to solve complex problems with computers. Experience is gained using procedural, functional, logic, and object-oriented programming languages to solve problems of increasing complexity.

At RWU, our interdisciplinary International Relations major celebrates human endeavor, diversity and opportunity by drawing upon subjects like history, sociology, economics, modern language and political science. Through internships, study abroad and specialization in either globalization, culture or area studies, you’ll learn the practical diplomacy, communication and critical thinking skills needed to help make a difference in the world in careers such as government, consulting and intelligence.

Our Finance degree provides you with the analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills needed for careers across the financial services industry. At RWU, you’ll make actual investment decisions by managing real-money portfolios in our high-tech trading room environment. You will learn all the business and finance fundamentals required for employment at corporations, banks, investment firms, insurance companies and government agencies.

Our unique Anthropology + Sociology program combines the ideas and methods of these two social sciences into an integrated study of social change, diversity and cultural awareness, both locally and globally. You’ll build strong hands-on research skills to prepare you for a career in community and social service or an advanced degree in law, education, social work or public policy.
