The Bachelor of Science in Community and Environmental Planning is a professional degree program that prepares students for positions in local, state, and federal agencies, private companies, planning departments, engineering firms, as well as graduate school programs in planning. The program introduces students to the diversity of the planning profession while providing an understanding of the broader purpose of planning, and the opportunity to focus on practice and application through research and studio credits. Students will gain exposure to the wide array of potential career opportunities within this field through the diverse experience of the full and part-time faculty members employed within the discipline. The planning curriculum at Rowan has a special focus on sustainable community design, land conservation, food systems and the specific planning practices and challenges of the region.

A useful background for students interested in careers in banking and financial institutions, government agencies, and consulting, our program focuses on learning to analyze the world in terms of tradeoffs and incentives — that is, to “think like an economist.”

As an economist, you will study people, firms, governments and markets. While economics can be linked to business, it also pairs well with other fields of study such as psychology, sociology, math, law, journalism and political science.

The undergraduate Law and Justice Studies program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of crime, the function of criminal law and the criminal justice system. The program focuses on preparing students for professional careers in the major areas of law enforcement and security services, court services, corrections and human services by combining academically challenging coursework with practical work experience through internships. The program provides the rigorous preparation necessary for students who wish to continue their education at the graduate level.

Rowan's Physics major balances general physics courses that develop analytical skills needed for any career direction with more advanced courses in highly technical areas. The department also offers coursework in astronomy and astrophysics. Personal attention is a hallmark of the program: enrollment in laboratory-based physics classes is limited to 24 students per section, and all lectures and labs are taught by faculty, not teaching assistants. In our junior-level Research Methods courses, students will have access to state-of-the-art equipment as they plan and execute a project under the direction of our research faculty. Physics majors can enter fields such as education, going on to teach at the secondary level, or pursue an advanced degree to become a college profesor and/or conduct research; others may enter fields such as busiess, computers, engineering, finance, law, and medicine.

Our Master of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering provides interdisciplinary coursework designed to increase the understanding and application of engineering principles. All of our program faculty possess expertise in transportation, geo-technology, structures, water resources, and the environment. Courses include applied, hands-on education, and build the knowledge and training needed for students to contribute to the engineering field.

Interdisciplinary areas include mechanics and materials, and sustainability. This specialization also includes the following focus areas: Mechanics and Materials; Signals, Systems and Computational Intelligence; Sustainability; and Transportation Engineering.

The B.S. Degree in Biochemistry, an interdisciplinary program, is designed to prepare students for a career in biochemistry or graduate studies. The program combines the value of a liberal education with appropriate classroom and laboratory training in chemistry, biology, math and physics. The focus is on a molecular approach to studying living systems. The biochemistry major can choose to specialize in related areas of chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics or structural biology, pre-med, allied health sciences or biomedical sciences by a careful selection of elective courses. The emphasis in all courses is on the acquisition of a solid knowledge base combined with hands-on laboratory work using modern equipment. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Mathematics major consists of 120 semester hours. The major requires students to take courses in logic, physics, computer science and applied and theoretical mathematics. Students in consultation with faculty advisors can construct flexible and comprehensive programs. The program prepares students to find careers in business, industry, government or education in positions such as researchers, actuaries, statisticians, analysts or teachers.
