Students studying English at AUM benefit from a varied and supportive environment that includes small classes and intensive, personal instruction from experienced professors who hold terminal degrees and have published significant research in their specialties.

Undergraduate English majors choose courses ranging from medieval and Renaissance literature to modern and postmodern literature, including courses on fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Majors may also take courses in rhetoric and composition, language and linguistics, literary criticism, and creative writing. A cornerstone course, English as a Field of Study, introduces students to career possibilities and to the English faculty.

A degree in Economics from AUM provides students with analytical tools and practical skills to succeed in business, finance and government. This is achieved by offering a mix of theoretical and applied courses in economics, the function of markets around the world and optimal criteria for decision-making.

At the most basic level of ability, managers must understand the fields of finance, accounting, marketing, strategy, IT, economics, operations, and human resource management. In later stages of a manager’s development into the executive ranks, he or she needs to understand how organizational processes interrelate and occur within a context. Executives must be able to make sense of societal changes, political drivers, social values, global interaction, and technological change.

Every organization needs educated, skilled leaders who can build effective teams and shepherd projects to completion. AUM’s Management concentration within the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree is a solid foundation for a life-long career in business. You’ll learn about organizational behavior and develop the interpersonal and decision-making skills that will allow you to flourish in a variety of business environments. With your degree, you’ll be prepared to work for businesses of all sizes, from small local firms to large multinational organizations. Internships will give you vital real-world experience.

In professional practice, highly creative fine artists work in fine- or commercial-art studios located in office buildings, warehouses, or lofts. Others work in private studios in their homes. Some artists share studio space, where they also may exhibit their work.

The Department of Fine Arts offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a Painting and Drawing concentration. You’ll spend most of your time getting practical, hands-on experience, guided by experienced faculty. Class sizes tend to be small which promotes student and faculty interaction. The visual arts training this program provides, along with the other liberal arts components of the curriculum, is a solid foundation for jobs in advertising, marketing, crafts, entrepreneurship and other career endeavors.

Auburn University at Montgomery’s School of Accountancy is the only AACSB – International separately accredited accounting program in Montgomery and the River Region and ranks the program in the top of all business AACSB accredited programs in the world. The program provides both undergraduate and graduate courses that prepare the student for entry-level positions in accounting, for graduate studies, and for meeting the education requirements to sit for the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) examination in Alabama.

The education requirements to take the Uniform CPA Examination as an Alabama candidate are higher than the minimum requirements for the B.S.B.A.  The additional requirements can be satisfied through undergraduate or graduate accounting courses at AUM.  Over 1/3 of accounting enrollments are post baccalaureate students completing their accounting requirements to sit for the CPA exam.

Students in grades 6 through 12 need committed educators dedicated to enriching their lives and helping them master the secondary school curriculum. You’ll get a dual degree: one in your content area of expertise — English, math, history/social science, or science— and one in Secondary Education. You can do the most important job on the planet — teaching a child to read and to wonder and to see the world. What greater satisfaction could there be than watching children’s minds and imaginations flower as you teach them reading, writing, science, math, and social studies?

In AUM’s Childhood Education program, you’ll get certified in either Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education or both, qualifying you to teach children from birth through grade 6. You’ll go from our classroom to your own classroom with a practicum under expert supervision in AUM’s own Early Learning Center, an internship under a local expert teacher, and hundreds of hours of supervised field experiences in local schools to practice what you’re learning in your teaching methods courses.

The Biology Health Sciences concentration is designed for students seeking a degree in biology while preparing for application to healthcare related professional school including veterinary, pharmacy, physician’s assistant, dentistry, physical therapy, or medical school. The courses in this concentration help student fulfill admission requirements or recommendations and are useful in preparing for professional school admission tests (MCAT, PCAT, and similar).  In addition there a number of electives that, with the help of our pre-health advisor (link to advising), are chosen to fulfill program specific requirements.

All students in our Health Sciences concentration meet with our pre-health sciences advisor regularly. Our advisor will help you choose classes and shape your degree path for your chosen profession and helps with applications. This includes assisting with mock interviews and coordinating committee letters of recommendation. To date our advisor boasts a 90% placement rate for students meeting entrance requirements.
