The Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) prepares undergraduate students for a variety of exciting and challenging career opportunities including: preschool teaching; administering programs for young children, adolescents, and adults; parent education; mental health services; child advocacy; and cooperative extension. Senior HDFS interns have been placed in outstanding work settings throughout the United States such as Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, the Children's Television Workshop/Sesame Street, Walt Disney World, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Interns have also been placed in many local schools, counseling centers, social service agencies, court systems, and assisted living facilities for seniors.

The Nutrition Science Option provides students with a curriculum well-grounded in the basic sciences with the practical application of the principles of physiology and biochemistry to the science of nutrition. The program is designed to meet the requirements for application to professional schools such as medical, dental, physical therapy, and other paramedical programs. This option also prepares students for graduate study in nutrition and other health-related disciplines.

Every day you interact with family, friends, authority figures, and strangers. Sociologists study the circumstances around this human behavior and social interaction, with a particular focus on groups, networks, social institutions, and social change.

Our Bachelor of Arts in sociology gives you an understanding of these social contexts and helps you develop skills in oral and written communication, critical thinking, and research. Because our faculty specialize in a wide range of fields, you’ll take courses on organizations, criminal and deviant behavior, social psychological processes, family life, legal institutions, medical systems, human population dynamics, and international development. You’ll have opportunities for internships and hands-on research experience.

Our Bachelor of Arts in public administration will prepare you for success in public service. You’ll develop the skills needed to assume major leadership roles in local, state, and national governments, community service groups, and non-profit organizations.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre performance is an extension of our BA in theatre and offers studio acting, voice, and movement training with professional actors. There are also numerous opportunities to participate in a wide variety of production experiences. You’ll audition for the program in the spring of your sophomore year, and begin this rigorous course of study in the fall of your junior year. You’ll engage in scene study, text analysis, voice, speech, dialects, mask work, makeup, on-camera training, and audition workshops with professional actors and producers.

Theatre is a rich and diverse field comprised of many valuable skills. Our Bachelor of Arts in theatre allows you to explore theatre as an art form, a profession, and a way of understanding our world. Built on a solid liberal arts foundation, you’ll be able to tailor your elective courses to your interests, whether it’s acting, design, dramaturgy, theory, technology or management.

Our Bachelor of Arts in German broadens your understanding of society through cultural exchange in German and provides you with communication skills, linguistic dexterity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. These cultural insights and practical tools will help you find your place in today’s competitive, multilingual marketplace.

Are you inspired by an intriguing poem or intricately woven story? Do you enjoy creating your own narratives, characters, and plot twists? Studying creative writing opens doors for you to better understand the writing around you and to improve your own creative endeavors.

Our creative writing major is an exciting learning experience that spans multiple genres. You’ll take courses that focus on the “architecture” of stories, poems, and essays; learn how each piece works; and apply those lessons to the creation of your original work. Workshops, conferences, and discussions of craft are the focal point of classroom instruction.

With a growing emphasis on preventative health care and interest in health, wellness and improved quality of life among consumers and employers, Auburn University's degree option in Nutrition and Wellness is designed to prepare students for successful career entry into the broad health and wellness professions. A multitude of career opportunities now present themselves throughout the voluntary, public and private sectors as employers, employees and private citizens alike are expressing great interest in a healthier working and/or living environment. Successful graduates will provide the education and counselling necessary to help citizens lead healthier and better quality lives, while helping employers improve employee productivity through the provision of a healthier workplace environment.

Marine biological research is conducted by five faculty members who share an interest in how marine organisms evolve, function, and interact with the environment in the world’s oceans. Marine biological studies at Auburn span all levels of organization from molecular genetics to community structure and ecosystem functioning. Projects involve campus-based laboratory research as well as field studies in Atlantic, Caribbean, tropical Indo-Pacific, and Antarctic seas.
