The department of Consumer and Design Sciences Apparel faculty prepare graduates for a variety of fashion-related careers in the global supply chain. Creativity, innovation, critical thinking, technical competency, and communication effectiveness are valued skill sets. With the integrated core of apparel-related courses, coupled with the focus on the merchandising or design and production management, students will be prepared to work effectively as a team member in a variety of fashion-related settings.

The Apparel Merchandising Option provides students with a unique perspective on this competitive, consumer-driven marketplace. A foundation in textile and apparel product knowledge and business fundamentals is combined with a focus on forecasting and interpreting consumer demand.

The internationalization of producing and marketing fashion-oriented products is emphasized. A strong business orientation is featured. Professional electives provide opportunities to individualize the student’s program to meet career goals. The senior level internship in either a domestic or international firm is focused on the student’s career interests. It may include marketing, store management, buying, sourcing, sales, merchandising, media and special events, fashion journalism, or consumer relations experiences.

Environmental concerns and evolving technologies are moving companies toward the use of sustainable forest biomaterial for everything from packaging, cosmetics, and automobiles to appliances, pharmaceuticals, and commercial construction. These developments are fueling an increased demand for professionals with expertise in biomass production, operational logistics, and conversion processes of products and packaging.

Historians enjoy reading, are curious about people, and have a desire to use the past as a lens through which to view the present. Our Bachelor of Arts in history equips you with the ability to ask clear questions, to research the information necessary for a well-constructed answer, to write factually and persuasively, and to think historically.

Our Bachelor of Arts in sociology gives you an understanding of these social contexts and helps you develop skills in oral and written communication, critical thinking, and research. Because our faculty specialize in a wide range of fields, you’ll take courses on organizations, criminal and deviant behavior, social psychological processes, family life, legal institutions, medical systems, human population dynamics, and international development. The Apparel Design and Production Management (APDP) Option is structured around a core of courses providing knowledge about raw materials and manufactured products, design and product development, production technology, and marketing concepts. Designers and product developers must be creative, but must also understand that fashion begins and ends with the consumer.

This option is unique because of its strong emphasis on developing an understanding of consumer preferences and identifying market niches, in addition to focusing on product development, design and production management principles. Students learn to manage apparel products from the design concept through retail sales, creating tech packages as part of a team-based Apparel Line Development capstone course. Apparel Design and Production Management students intern with a domestic or international firm; with couture designers or in industry settings. Unique internships in theatrical costuming, or in museums with historical costume or textile collections are also possible.

The BS in Chemistry provides a strong background in chemistry while allowing students to specialize in areas of interest. It is especially well suited for students leaning towards medical sciences while allowing more flexibility than that allowed in the American Chemical Society-approved biochemistry curriculum. The program allows for great versatility in the junior and senior years, allowing the curriculum to be tailored to individual goals. The curriculum prepares students for professional careers in chemistry or biochemistry and advanced degree programs in chemistry, biochemistry and medically related fields.

Auburn’s Wildlife Enterprise Management (WLEM) degree is one of only two such programs in the United States.  This cross-disciplinary degree program, founded on the basic principles of wildlife management, hospitality services, and business management, ensures that graduates are prepared for employment at any of thousands of hunting and fishing lodges, ranches, corporate retreat facilities, and other consumptive use facilities worldwide.

The degree is collaboratively taught by world-renowned faculty from the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and the Colleges of Business and Human Sciences.  With this program, students gain the necessary skill set required of graduates and access to a wide range of internship opportunities across the globe. This combination of innovative classroom instruction and real-world experience assures graduates are able to take advantage of abundant career opportunities.

The non-thesis Master of Science in Materials Engineering provides students an advanced level of knowledge in mechanical properties, materials structure, materials thermodynamics, kinetics and electrical, optical and magnetic properties of materials.

Geology is the study of the Earth, including its materials, processes, and history. Basic materials studied are rocks, minerals, and fossils. Also included are resources such as metals, gemstones, fossil fuels, and groundwater. Processes are those found deep within the Earth where temperatures and pressures are high, as well as those that take place under low-temperature, low-pressure conditions at the Earth's surface, where organic as well as inorganic processes are found. The history of the planet is recorded in rock and mineral products and in the record of life as preserved by fossils.
