Learn about nutrition and the research, development, packaging, and distribution of our food supply. At LSU, you will participate in hands-on learning, professional development, and faculty-led research to prepare for a health-related profession or career in business or agriculture.

Nutritional Sciences/Pre-medicine: This concentration will prepare you for a career in the health professions, specifically dietetics or medicine, or in the food industry. Since nutrition plays a role in the prevention and treatment of many chronic and acute diseases, an understanding of the role of nutrients in the body provides pre-medical students with a strong basis for building their medical careers.

Learn about the properties and composition of matter and the interactions and alterations of substances. Chemistry is at the core of most scientific disciplines, including the study of polymers, biotechnology, pollution control, and energy. There are nine available concentrations, which will allow you to narrow your focus to the career track that works best for you or help you prepare for graduate study. 

Environmental Chemistry
Recommended for students pursuing careers as a chemical professional or for entrance to graduate study in chemistry, this area focuses on the study of the sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fates of chemical species in the air, soil, and water environments.

Economics is the study of how people choose to use resources. These can include the time and talent people have available; the land, buildings, equipment, and other tools on hand; and the knowledge of how to combine them to create useful products and services. Economics will provide you with analytical skills and a breadth of economic understanding that prepares you for a career in business or government or for further study in economics, law, or public policy.

Petroleum engineers design and manage drilling and production operations around the world wherever oil and natural gas is found. This may take place in the Arctic, jungles, oceans, or even in shale formations here in the United States. Petroleum engineers thoroughly study geologic and engineering data in order to design drilling and production operations that maximize production rates and reservoir recovery. As a petroleum engineer, you might move to field, district, area, staff, and chief petroleum engineering positions. • Middle East: The concentration in the Middle East focuses on the religion, politics, art, and literature of the Middle East and North Africa. The concentration includes the Arab world, as well as important bordering states such as Turkey and Iran. This is a region with a rich history and tradition which has been a preoccupation of recent United States foreign policy.

With a field that’s as broad as life itself, the biological sciences major gives you ample exposure to help you figure out where you belong within this area of study. Upon graduation you will be well prepared for placement in graduate school; medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy, or veterinary school; and in careers that range from public health to environmental science.
