Prepare for your life as a writer in Chicago’s thriving literary community. MFA students complete a book-length manuscript of publishable quality and receive intensive faculty mentorship and support throughout the process. Students develop a specialty and sub-specialty in fiction and nonfiction (or vice versa) and work in any prose tradition, including the novel and long-form nonfiction. While all our students are distinguished by the quality of their writing and their dedication to craft, some of them arrive on campus knowing exactly what they plan to work on, while others take advantage of the room to explore. Our curriculum allows students to thrive in either approach.

Mathematics is a beautiful and interesting subject that will help you gain analytical and problem-solving skills. Mathematicians are problem solvers that combine a deep knowledge of statistics, numbers, functions, shapes, structures and their interconnections to solve real world problems. Mathematics opens the doors to many promising career paths. A study by PayScale shows that the top 15 highest-earning college degrees have a common element: mathematics. Popular mathematics careers include teaching, data analyst, quantitative analyst, computer science, data science, operations research, biomathematics, cryptography, and finance.

Actuarial science applies probability theory and risk management to the areas of life and health insurance, property and casualty insurance, pension plans, and other employee benefit plans. Risk analysts and actuaries, who evaluate the long-term financial impact of these plans on both the issuing company and the purchaser or beneficiary of the plan, are employed by insurance companies, consulting firms, large corporations and governmental agencies. The major in actuarial science emphasizes the mathematical theory that underlies risk evaluation.

The Orchestral Studies program prepares students majoring in a woodwind, brass, or string instrument, harp or percussion for a career as orchestral musicians.

The Master of Arts in Instructional Leadership (ILED) prepares licensed teachers to become effective and democratic instructional leaders in diverse school environments. Upon completion of the program, candidates will be eligible to add either the principal or teacher leader endorsement to their Illinois teaching licenses.

International studies is a growing interdisciplinary field that offers students the opportunity to study politics, economics, history, sociology, anthropology and communication as parts of a complex and evolving global system. Rather than focusing just on relations between states in the international system, the international studies major affords students the opportunity to create a focus on particular geographic areas of the world, the evolution of the international system itself, or on global race, gender and activism.

The Bachelor's in Journalism and Media Studies degree is a mix of hands-on professional courses and theoretical courses that allows students a choice between two related but distinct concentrations. Students in the journalism concentration will complete coursework in online, broadcast and print journalism and are thus prepared for work in today's multimedia news environment. Students in the media studies concentration gain the objective knowledge, tools and skills to analyze, evaluate and create messages using all forms of media technologies to prepare for graduate study as well as for work in the media industries and careers involving mediated communications.

The Master of Science in Biotechnology and Chemical Science (BTCS) prepares students for work in a variety of professional settings, including the food science, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, or for academic research and graduate study. The program is appropriate for students holding a baccalaureate degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related sciences, or for those who have taken the prerequisite undergraduate courses. Chemical Science is one of three concentrations within the program.

The BFA in Acting is a pre-professional degree program designed to develop a strong foundation in the skills required for a career as an actor on stage, and in film and television. The acting program provides students with intensive training in several techniques including Stanislavski-based work, Viewpoints, period styles, on-camera technique, circus arts, stage combat, and Linklater voice and body technique. Acting majors also receive training in dance and voice lessons as part of their curriculum. Along with opportunities to perform in mainstage and blackbox productions, acting majors also have the opportunity to intern at some of Chicago’s most prestigious theatres including Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Steppenwolf Theater Company and Goodman Theatre, and dozens of smaller Chicago theatres.
