The study of history provides students with important skills – including critical reading, writing and thinking – that will make them informed citizens ready to work for the common good. The study of history not only prepares students to participate in civic life, but is also a stepping stone to careers in many diverse fields.

Recent graduates are employed as scientists in academia, industry and government, or pursuing postgraduate education. In addition to our rigourous academic program, students can work side-by-side with faculty on research projects such as discovering novel inhibitors of bacterial efflux pumps as a way to combat multi-drug resistance in bacteria, studying biodegradation of polymer coatings, and discovering new photodynamic lung cancer treatments.

Students have the opportunity to create their own program of study. If you have a specific project in mind or want to study a combination of writing and literature, you can work closely with an adviser to plan a track toward your UD degree.

In addition to our rigorous academic program, students are provided with many opportunities to work side-by-side with faculty on research projects such as developing improved flame retardants, studying biodegradation of polymer coatings and discovering new photodynamic lung cancer treatments. Geologists study the Earth’s materials, structures and processes, and how they have changed over the 4.6 billion years of the Earth’s history. In doing so, geologists address some of society’s most important problems, such as finding energy, water and mineral resources; environmental pollution and its prevention; and natural hazards such as landslides, volcanoes and earthquakes.

Our students are taught by an outstanding array of scholar-teachers in areas of inquiry that include American politics, public law, public administration, international relations, comparative politics, public policy, environmental politics, urban politics and political theory.

The issues facing us today are increasingly global in nature. The context in which we lead our professional and personal lives is steadily becoming more multicultural and global in scope, demanding new levels of international knowledge - knowledge beyond just geography, a few phrases of a foreign language, and a guide book.

Students hone their skills in styles they are passionate about while breaking out of their comfort zone and exploring diverse genres from early counterpoint to the latest popular styles.
