Our curriculum is flexible and the program welcomes applicants with accounting, business, and non-business degrees. We take into account the undergraduate courses you’ve already taken, allowing you to obtain your degree in 8–16 courses (32–64 credit hours) depending on your background. 

Civil engineering immerses you in the built environment. Civil engineers oversee the smart and responsible design and creation of structures and systems that are familiar to all of us: roads, bridges, buildings, airports, sewer systems, and more. Increasingly they are concerned not only with the what of the world around us, but the how: the ways in which people live in and utilize the built environment, and how we can optimize that for the benefit of human beings and the planet.

Civil engineering is a field with many pathways, and a UIC education will open them for you. Students who pursue an undergraduate major in civil engineering may find themselves drawn to careers in structural engineering (including designing structures to manage an increasing incidence of natural disasters), urban planning, coastal preservation, transportation engineering, water-resources management, materials science, environmental engineering, and beyond.

The UIC Business Liautaud Graduate School Master of Science in Marketing Program provides essential concepts and tools for a career in marketing. The program is ideal for students and young professionals with non-business degrees looking to transition to a marketing position or for business graduates seeking more specialized training in marketing.

Our marketing program offers unique concentrations in Global and Multicultural Marketing and in Marketing Research, in addition to a concentration in Advertising and Communications. Or you can opt for a general MS in Marketing, a flexible option that you can customize to your professional interests.

In this program, you will learn how to:

• Develop integrated marketing strategies and solutions that address market challenges and exploit internal organizational and external market opportunities
• Design, conduct, analyze, and utilize market research to aid managerial decision making
• Create effective marketing tactics by configuring, monitoring and managing elements of the marketing mix
• Plan advertising and promotional campaigns, such as radio, television, print, outdoor, online, SEM
• Monitor and forecast marketing and sales trends
• Measure the ROI of marketing programs and by collecting and analyzing data
• Develop, execute, evaluate and present effective digital and social media marketing campaigns
• Use major tools in digital marketing for paid search ads, search engine optimization (SEO), organic social media, social media ads and mobile marketing strategies

Students majoring in finance will have access to faculty that brings both extensive real-world experience and an active research agenda on a variety of subjects into the classroom. They acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in an atmosphere of intellectual stimulation and active learning.

Our curriculum is built to help students focus on their dream careers within finance. The rich list of elective courses introduces students to various fields including corporate financial analysis, business valuation, investments and portfolio management, banking, international finance, trading, and risk management. Through close ties with finance professionals, we supplement the course materials with guest speakers from across the financial sectors. Our research faculty provides students with innovative educational programs that help students apply new insights to critical business problems.

Chemistry is a central science that provides much of the fundamental understanding needed to deal with society’s needs. Students with a degree in chemistry find they are prepared for jobs in the chemical, health, and pharmaceutical industries and in many other settings, including teaching, environmental settings, energy research, biomedical labs, forensics, and occupational and public health.

The Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Chemistry requires fewer chemistry courses and permits a larger number of electives outside of chemistry. It provides a program with many of the courses required for admission to medical schools and dental schools. The degree also provides a useful background for those who wish to pursue careers in business (management, marketing, sales).

Philosophy (from the Greek “love of wisdom”) originated as the search for understanding concerning the most basic features of reality, the natural world, and human life. The discipline prizes and develops the skill of engaging effectively with arguments on a tremendous range of subjects. In ancient times, philosophers pioneered the study of topics from the physical cosmos to the gods to human conduct. They debated not only the character of fundamental reality but also questions of how we can attain knowledge of it. To this day, philosophy engages with questions drawn from every part of our life and experience. For example: Is there such a thing as a purely objective observation? Am I identical with my brain? Is it ever permissible to break the law? Why is there evil in the world? Is death to be feared, and why?

Job candidates and applicants to professional schools can only be helped by being able to examine both sides of a question, think critically, write cogently, and solve very general abstract problems. Moreover, the powers of reflection, imagination, self-expression, and engagement with the ideas of others that philosophy cultivates are in themselves of fundamental value for human life.

The STEM-designated, MS in Construction Engineering and Management degree is designed to meet the growing demand in the field for highly skilled construction engineering managers. Students learn about a wide range of topics, including construction regulations, quality control, and environmental sustainability.

Industrial engineers find ways to make complex processes and systems work better. They help operations to run more efficiently and more safely, leading to improvements in the products we use every day, people’s jobs, and human satisfaction.

As an industrial engineer, you might design and implement better ways of doing things or making things. You might find ways to improve the value or profit of goods that we use every day. You also could oversee project management, devise improvements to manufacturing plants and factories, or harness the power of data to imaging the next generation of processes.
