Economics is the study of the allocation of resources. Using mathematical and statistical models, economists consider how resources such as labor, land, money, and technology are distributed.  Economics majors gain a broad understanding of the field of economics as well as skills in statistics, mathematics, organization, research methodology, and verbal and written communication. The Bachelor of Science in economics is designed for students desiring a more technical and mathematical approach to economics in preparation for a Ph.D. in economics.

History majors at the University of Mississippi take a range of courses across American and European history as well as history of other regions. They take at least one advanced research course where they utilize primary resources to address questions of historical importance.

The M.S. in engineering science is offered in a number of emphasis areas: aeroacoustics, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computational hydroscience, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electromagnetics, environmental engineering, geology, geological engineering, hydrology, mechanical engineering, material science and engineering, and telecommunications.

A M.S. in engineering science with emphasis in geological engineering prepares a student with advanced technical knowledge and communication skills for pursuing a career in industry, engineering research and development, public service, or for doctoral work.

Sociology is the systematic study of human social life. The B.A. in sociology provides students with the basic tools of sociological analysis including social research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) and theory. The curriculum in sociology equips students to more effectively negotiate the diverse society in which we live by addressing social inequalities, culture, community development, social institutions, and social change.

The primary function of the accountancy program is to provide professional education required to prepare students for careers as professional accountants in financial institutions, government, industry, nonprofit organizations, and public practice. Emphasis is placed upon both theoretical principles and concepts and practical applications to fulfill the need for reliable financial information. Professional courses provide students with the accounting education required to commence and continue to develop in a wide range of professional accounting careers.

The M.S. in sport and recreation administration provides advanced education and vocational opportunities to develop leisure service delivery skills and evaluation or research competencies for students committed to careers in leisure, sport, recreation, health, tourism, and/or research. Students choose either a 1) thesis, 2) special event planning, or 3) internship based on their education, experience, and career goals.
