The Department of Mathematics offers a B.A. in mathematics for students who wish a broad education in a mathematical field in preparation for careers in teaching or other areas.

The B.A. degree allows greater compatibility with other areas of study, and prepares students for careers such as education through a broad knowledge of different subfields of both theoretical and applied mathematics.

The Master of Music is an advanced professional degree designed to develop a particular area in music to a high level of specialization. The university offers the M.M. with the following emphases:

• Performance in woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments, piano, and voice;
• Music education;
• Choral conducting;
• Musicology;
• Music theory;
• Ethnomusicology;
• Collaborative piano.

Emphasis - Music Performance
The M.M. degree with an emphasis in performance is designed to prepare a student to become a professional musician (performing as a pianist, woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instrumentalist, or vocalist) and/or prepares him/her for further graduate study or professional training. The performance emphasis can be completed with a concentration (option) in either piano, vocal, or instrumental.

African American Studies majors at the University of Mississippi select the following areas of specialization: culture, history, or political & social institutions. You can tailor your exploration of the African and African American experience by choosing from among 60 courses in different disciplines, including anthropology, art history, English, gender studies, history, music, political science, religion, and sociology.

The Risk Management and Insurance major prepares students for exciting careers in an industry that has a high demand for talent. Students at Ole Miss gain marketable skills regarding the assessment and management of risk.

What will you learn?
Risk impacts individuals, businesses, and governments across the entire world. Without risk there is no reward. The RMI curriculum focuses on commercial risk management and culminates in a capstone course where you will perform a comprehensive risk management audit of a company, write a detailed report of risk control and transfer recommendations, and present your solutions to a panel of experts. You will also find out where you fit best in the industry by working as an intern - most students earn 6 hours of academic credit for working paid summer internships. Student internships include duties ranging from designing social media strategies for insurance brokers to underwriting insurance policies.

Economics is the study of the allocation of resources. Using mathematical and statistical models, economists consider how resources such as labor, land, money, and technology are distributed.  Economics majors gain a broad understanding of the field of economics as well as skills in statistics, mathematics, organization, research methodology, and verbal and written communication.

Economics provides a broad and systematic way of thinking about social, financial, and business problems. The B.A. in economics prepares a graduate for many positions in business and government. Some positions are economic analyst, statistician, and research assistant.

The B.A. degree in physics is suggested for students wishing to teach physics in high school or to enter graduate or professional schools, such as medical school or law school. The department also offers a special B.A. curriculum for pre-medical students, which includes physics courses that are especially useful for medical students. It is recommended that students interested in teaching high school physics obtain a B.A. physics degree and a secondary education certification.

The B.A. in psychology prepares students for careers in which a fuller understanding of human behavior is needed or to enter graduate programs in psychology and professional schools such as law and medicine. Students learn the scientific approach to the study of human and animal behavior, and can take courses in a variety of subfields, such as social, cognitive, personality, abnormal, developmental, and behavioral neuroscience. Students also learn the research process: experimental design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

Psychology majors at the University of Mississippi learn the scientific approach to the study of human and animal behavior, and can take courses in a variety of subfields, such as social, cognitive, personality, abnormal, developmental, and behavioral neuroscience. They also learn the research process: experimental design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

The B.A. in chemistry is designed for students who wish to pursue a degree in the physical sciences with a broad liberal arts background. Some students use this degree program to prepare for admission to pharmacy school or as the basis for studies in environmental law. Students interested in teaching chemistry at the high-school level may use this degree to prepare for alternate route teacher certification by following a specified curriculum with a minor in either biological science, mathematics, or physics.

The B.S. in chemical engineering provides the student with a fundamental knowledge of chemical engineering science and prepares graduates for a variety of careers in industry and government, or for advanced study in engineering, business, or professional school.

With a chemical engineering degree, you will be ready to pursue careers in manufacturing, petrochemicals, oil and gas, biotechnology, the environmental field and more. Your degree can also pave the way to top graduate programs in medicine, business, law and advanced engineering fields.

You can choose the standard track, the pre-med track or one of the following emphases:

• Biotechnology – this includes the study and use of biological processes to make advancements in fields as diverse as drugs, agriculture and food.
• Environmental – this will give you the foundation to work in environmental areas, such as waste and pollution reduction.
• Manufacturing – you’ll learn the skills to improve processes and productivity in advanced manufacturing environments.
• Materials – you’ll delve into the world of advanced materials – such as polymers and nanomaterials (no hyphen in nanomaterials) – that can handle extreme conditions.

The B.A. in classics is an interdisciplinary degree involving the study of ancient Greek and Latin, literature in translation, history, classical archaeology, and art history.

Emphasis - Classical Civilization
The B.A. in classics with an emphasis in classical civilization provides students with the basics in at least one of the ancient languages (ancient Greek and Latin) and introduces them to some of the important issues and questions regarding Greek and Roman art and archaeology, history, literature, myth, philosophy, and religion. Students have found successful careers in many different professions, including law, medicine, the ministry, teaching, museum curatorship, and exhibit design.
