The M.S. in mathematics is designed primarily for students who are attracted to mathematics as a major scholarly pursuit, including students who plan eventually to work toward the doctorate in this field. The M.S. degree also prepares students who are looking for professional careers in mathematics, either as teachers or as research mathematicians.

The study of Arabic provides students with the practical instruction in a second language required to function in a nonnative environment, as well as the cultural awareness and intellectual strategies necessary to successfully navigate a foreign landscape.

The B.A. in psychology prepares students for careers in which a fuller understanding of human behavior is needed or to enter graduate programs in psychology and professional schools such as law and medicine. Students learn the scientific approach to the study of human and animal behavior, and can take courses in a variety of subfields, such as social, cognitive, personality, abnormal, developmental, and behavioral neuroscience. Students also learn the research process: experimental design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

At its core, computer science involves the rigorous study of processes, a series of actions to achieve some desired result. In particular, it is the study of processes carried out by computers. Computer science students learn how to define processes and encode them so that they can be carried out efficiently by computers. This involves such tasks as determining what result is needed (systems analysis), developing efficient and flexible software to encode the process (algorithm design, programming, and software engineering), and organizing the data needed and generated by the process (data structures and database management). They also learn how to use the technologies of computers, communication technologies, and the control programs work together to effectively achieve the desired results.

The major in computer science for the B.A. degree offers a flexible curriculum that enables the study of computer science to be combined with studies in other areas of the liberal arts and sciences.

The Department of Modern Languages offers the M.A. in modern languages with emphases in French, German, linguistics, Spanish, and teaching English as a second language (TESOL).

Emphasis - Linguistics
tudents who specialize in linguistics will be exposed to a broad range of linguistic inquiry and will then be encouraged to develop a specific research agenda. With its strong emphasis on research and academic writing, this degree prepares students for doctoral study in general, theoretical, or applied linguistics.

Art history majors at the University of Mississippi learn about monuments, artists and artistic periods. Students learn art studio fundamentals, understand art theory and criticism, conduct research, and discern the hidden/not-so-hidden ideas behind works of art.

The Department of Mathematics offers a B.S. in mathematics for students who wish to pursue graduate training in mathematics or to undertake careers in mathematically oriented professions. The B.S. degree allows the freedom to pursue mathematical depth in areas such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, discrete mathematics, mathematics and computer science, or finance and actuarial science.

The M.M. degree with an emphasis in musicology is an advanced professional degree designed to give the student a broad research background while also providing a 24-credit specialization. A reading knowledge of one foreign language and a thesis are required.
